Yeah, you’re right, Kanye is totally fighting against culture in that song.
So it’s so brilliant that the music video his this big zoom in on Kris Jenner as they all move out into nature. And it doesn’t just look like nature. It looks biblical in some way.

I mean Kris Jenner is his family idk if you were being ironic here

    You're not wrong but...

Alright, I'm gonna use Street Lights as an example, and to preface, Street Lights is one of my top 10 favorite songs of all-time (I also said the Say You Will example that Kenig used was a bad one)

Street Lights in my opinion is neither deeply personal nor super vague. It's clear what he's saying in the song but he's doing it an overly complicated and dare I say, corny way. Not corny as in the way the word has come to be used but corny as in banal and unoriginal. It sounds like something a 19 year old pop star would write to really tug at the heart strings of their tween/early teen fanbase. That's probably intentional though and that's great.

It's not bad, by any stretch. I LOVE songs that have songwriting like that, but I don't think it's some of Kanye's strongest, not even close.

These things are so subjective so I totally see your point about it being kinda "banal" even if I feel differently

At the same time, to me, the power of the song lies in that approach to the lyrics. When the song isn't tied down to any particular scene/moment, you really feel the weight of someone regretting and reflecting on an entire lifetime

Like "let me know ... do I still have time to grow?" isn't about some random insecurity, it's about a person's entire life as a whole stagnating. Existential pain vs minor hang-ups

That's how I see it at least
