The moment and the memories associated with it really. Growing up I rejected a lot of things from American pop culture. The boyband era, the alternative rock/post-grunge bands, the britney's, etc. Before I was even a teen I was listening to Rakim, Pac, Nas, DMX, Bone Thugs, Pun. And then Blackalicious, The Roots, Aesop, Mos Def, Kweli, Common, Little Brother, Dalek, real backpacker s***.

I legit believed in the 2pac conspiracies that he faked his death, and the way it went he was supposed to return 7 years after his death, so 2003. September 7th came around, and nothing. I'm like 12 so I was devastated lol. Few weeks later I'm watching MTV Jams as I'm getting ready for school, and the most amazing song and video comes on, Through the Wire. Song touched my soul at a time that I needed some new inspiration. Ever since then he basically became my favorite artist.

So as the years go on, locally where I was, most people were into the Texas rap, 3 6, Wayne, etc(which i still loved). They didn't fw east coast or midwest s*** really. People didn't believe me when I said he was the greatest artist out. And even though he had sucess he was still snubbed in the mainstream. He's up for a grammy for best new artist and loses to f***ing Maroon 5.

I'm mad as s***, and my brother has to calm me down and basically tells me the country as a whole doesn't like and view the s*** we do like we do. We're just not like them.

So LR comes out and then we start heading to graduation. I'm older, summer starts, turn 16 get my drivers license and a job, and I spend the whole summer working and in the gym. went from 150-180lbs that summer got f***ing jacked it was crazy they thought I was juicing. But the CTMN mixtape comes out, and there's this f***ing snippet on there man.

and I can't put into words how amazing this snippet was man. Like most people here don't remember being in a pre-Stronger world, and it's hard to imagine only having 50 seconds of that song and wonder how the rest goes. But it was completely unique to anything I had ever heard. It was f***ing crazy.

I was just so damn hyped for this album, possibly the most hyped I've ever been, and then the rollout starts with the 50 cent sales battle. I'm arguing with people online and s***. And on the day I wake up at 6 am so I can go to the local grocery store to buy the album so I can give it a full listen before school. They hadn't even put it out yet I had to ask a worker to check if it was in the back. Got to the school parking lot and gave it a listen and, man. Get home and go online to see what everyones saying about the album and the battle, and Kanye did it. Instant classic. He won. Vindication. At that moment he was the biggest artist in the world, and he was right to be so egotistical. He was the artist of the generation. I had told 'em all too but they didn't listen.

A publication said something to the effect of "Graduation is when the world realized that Kanye was as great as he said he was." and as great as I said he was. So that's how in some ways it's my favorite album ever.

Good for you for sticking to personal sentiment rather than going with the flow of general public opinion. Love that

lmao In 7th grade I remember having my mom drive me to walmart before school to cop Graduation & Curtis...listened to Curtis once and I still have that same original Grad CD to this day, same with Dropout and LR

I been a fan since Dropout too and like you I was listening to a lot of Cam, Jay, NORE, 50, etc. bc I was lucky enough to have parents with a pretty cool taste in music but man I remember when Ye hit the scene like yesterday. S*** was authentically different.

People don't realize how special Ye been from the rip. I remember thinking, as a 3rd/4th grader, when All Falls Down or Through the Wire or Jesus Walks would play on MTV that this dude was just different man
