hot pancakesi posted this in the other thread in music but i think it kinda makes sense.
this is my response to complaints about cohesiveness (i actually think this album is cohesive for the most part and tells a story)
BE AWARE: I’m still formulating this so it may seem a little run on. Just my pure thoughts while I fine tune it
Donda is almost like a concept album about him in some makeshift underground questionable church (kind of like the church in Saints Row 1 if you ever played that) trying to channel / summon the spirit of his mother
the intro track with Donda being repeated over and over in not by accident. there is a lot of talk about repetition in religion about how it can have healing powers, or manifest things you want to happen
the first few tracks which are harder and darker are like him summoning the Donda army - so basically, Donda is not only his mother, but his squad of protection (hence all the features)
the songs up until the Donda skit represent either dark or sinful themes for the most part, up until right before the skit where he comes to acceptance and repentance (24, remote control, hell, etc)
then during the Donda skit she finally is summoned (“it feels good to be home” / “i thank you for your support”)
and that’s when the album takes a smoother turn - mission completed.
even tell the vision kind of makes sense. it’s like a chaotic ascendence into heaven (“we made it”/“i thank god that we made it”)
Cool read, I specifically agree with the underground church thing
I was thinking one of two things about the Christian element, either the vibe of the album/LP’s is when you’re a fully practicing Christian and things are still going wrong, kinda like one step away from questioning your own faith.
Or like you said kinda like a run down church, this is the bad part of Christianity(not the nasty part) but generally just showing that it’s not all white clothes and angels- Aug 31, 2021che_guevara
