The album cover is black, this album is about darkness. At the start of the album, God Breathed is just pure darkness. By the end of the album, you feel like you’re surrounded by light with No Child Left Behind.

Kanye is very intentional with this s***.

I’m about to make a graph for this s***

There is clearly a theme on Donda.

(Not a troll, actual music discussion)

The album is about coming out of darkness and reaching lightness.

It’s about going to jail and getting out, and mass incarceration)

It’s about going to hell and getting to heaven.

It’s about having a divorce and getting back on your feet.

It’s about reaching a low in your career and coming back.

The theme of this album is A COMEBACK!!!

Jail is a prelude to the album basically, explains how he’s going to jail (actual jail/divorced/hell/darkness)

The album really starts off with God Breathed
That outro feels like you’re being lowered into the depths of hell. Kanye talks about how it’s OK to not be okay.

Then a bunch of songs with hard hitting rappers that sound like they need Jesus & the light.

I’m skipping a lot here but, the album progressively gets lighter and brighter over time. Kanye knows exactly what he’s doing here.

For the songs that don’t touch on the themes LYRICALLY, its still carried on through the PRODUCTION.

    Make Me New Again?
    Rebirth?

Then we get to TELL THE VISION

We made it Pop Smoke raps from f***ing Heaven.
    Made it where?

You made it out of hell.

Then the brightest part of the album happens. I consider this the ‘holy’ section of songs.

    LORD I NEED YOU
    PURE SOULS
    COME TO LIFE

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND… The final ascension.
Quick thoughts. There is a theme here, and a loose story.

    Great post Spot on

    Interesting post

Ofc while i will always appreciate actual music critique and discussion and the way you explain it is compelling at the end of the day it’s music so any messages, themes, vibes etc should be delivered through the medium not from over a***yzed mini persuasive essays lol

And after listening to it multiple times the actual album definitely doesn’t present any kind of strong theme that holds thru

But tbh that’s the weakest part of my critique anyway. Good music doesn’t always need a theme.

Main thing that’s making me drop it from a 8.5 initially to 7.8 ish is that due to the nature of the record a lot of the songs don’t fit in a singular listening experience and that matters cus there are A LOT of songs

    good read

“God Breathed,” the album’s third track, plays over an ambient Gregorian chant, welcoming Christianity into the themes already at play. The Christianity of Donda is far more polished and representative of Kanye than that of the seemingly rushed Jesus is King album.

With most music, I see colors and imagery.

But with Donda I really don’t see colors.

    I see black & white.

I feel it’s very intentional all the color was stripped from this album.

I think about Hurricane with the original sample being removed, then putting in the organs.

The OG song was bright and colorful, and Kanye changed that with intent.

Instead of colors though, I just see fluctuating levels of lightness.

    I’m d*** free btw.

There isn’t an overarching theme on this record

Just loose bits here and there

Also it doesn’t matter ik more about music than you so what u think is irrelevant
