I'ma Fix Donda & Why You Should Too
(I'll try to keep this as short as possible, but stick with me if you can.)
I just listened to Donda for the first time. With every album release, I like to pair my first listen with an evocative but passive experience — something to create an atmosphere without distracting from the music itself. Today I took the train from Edinburgh to London. (It's a lovely 4-hour journey along the coast to start with, and an especially beautiful day here in the UK — nothing but blue skies and crisp sunshine.)
Previously, I had watched the second live performance, so I had heard most of the tracks, even if only once. As well as this, I've read a reviews, both from critics and many of you. All this to say, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect but was still quite surprised overall.
To say I'm a huge fan of Kanye West is an understatement. I approach every release (of any form: music, film, fashion, interview etc) with great anticipation, endless gratitude, and an open heart. First and foremost, I always try to just enjoy it for what it is but ultimately can never resist thinking more deeply — attempting to unpick and decode every aspect of it I can — considering the larger narrative and challenging my own preconceptions as much as possible.
So, as I was listening to Donda for the first time this morning, I had a realisation that it's not an "album". Perhaps the closest comparison I could make right now is a playground. But the purpose of this message isn't to give it another label, but just to remind you to focus on how it makes you FEEL.
Whether it's just because of the listening parties, the leaks, or more access to "behind the scenes" than ever before — I couldn't help myself rearranging this set of songs in my head. Usually I have little patience for this type of self entitlement ownership, and would never even think to listen to album on shuffle. But somehow, this feels different... Like an intentional seed of possibility he planted in our heads from the start.
Anyway, here's where I've got to (for now). I'm sure you won't agree, and that's the point!

Keep it loopy.
