what’s amazing to me is i don’t think i’ve heard a sound criticism why donda is this let down of an album
part of it i think has to do with the fact that most critics enjoy this generic s*** and then pretend like these artists care about how their music sounds.
there are only a few artists out there in the majors who i would say that about who care about the sound of their records. Ye is one of these artists
i would respect the criticism more if the reviewer didn’t just badmouth ye as an occupation.
the perfect example is yeezus. if you don’t like it, that’s cool. but there are plenty of bizarre rock records that are unorthodox and have silly lyrics & they aren’t ridiculed.
i dunno if you don’t like it, just say why you don’t like it, don’t go off on a tangent of award/media appearances or none of this nonsense.
furthermore, these media outlets could disinvite him but they never do…..they never do. and it isn’t like he’s tweeting or talking on ig live every day. blame mtv blame the outlet that keep talking about him. these are just some random thoughts i had when i listened to donda. 😎
It's definitely an occupation at this point for some of these outlets. But also, I've noticed that ever since Yeezus, Kanye is one of the few artists whose music gets knocked based on what he says rather than how it sounds. Whether it's a supposedly contradictory narrative or one that's difficult to follow, or whether he's not practicing what he's preaching, critics really dig in with him whereas they gloss over far less provocative or generic lyrics from most other artists. On Yeezus so many couldn't get past the aggressive merging of sexuality and politics, on Pablo very few observed the back and forth between crassness and spirituality as intentional, and the albums were docked points based not on the music, but on the words...words that I feel are misunderstood in the first place. All that could definitely be seen as an extension of judging the man himself rather than the music, too.
