While on the one hand it does feel disingenuous to review this version now that it’s obvious that this is a v1, Kanye brought that upon himself by having all this spectacle around a rough draft. He literally could’ve just waited until the album is finished.

I’m personally not particularly opposed to the work in progress strategy in theory (shitty that it was the bait to sell $200 iPod shuffles in practice) but this is what releasing said works in process and posturing them as a release gets you.

I’ll say this, there’s not a single person I’ve talked to irl - across the spectrum of Kanye ambivalent to diehard that actually owns a stem player - that isn’t either fully disappointed in this current version or couching it in “when it’s finished it’ll be good”, with myself in the latter camp. And given that these songs are released in CDQ, I think those reactions are valid.
