Album is uplifting af for me
I never really believed in god was raised Baptist but the vibes are on this album are super positive
lmao, I would probably go with an 8... But yeah I love it, I'll always be a fan of Kanye even if he's dropping mid or even bad music but I didn't think this album would make me a fan of current Ye like this and it has. Top 5 album for me this year, although not top 3. I could change my mind but I tend to stick to my Ye album opinions, outside of TLOP which was a grower.
Definitely picking up on the 808s on some songs, which I think is a good thing. Combined with the gospel, it gives it an almost singer-songwriter backed by choir feel which I think really suits him moving into a new era of his career.
The lyrics aren't blowing me away, but they also don't get away. They aren't bad and where they are good they add to the songs. Also, they all help the songs. They all show just how much intent and focus he has with this album, which imo makes it all the more powerful. He's not expanding and making a layered, insightful commentary for the majority of the album like he might have tried to in the past but at the same time, the lyrics feel like they're portraying something that is meaningful and that actually has substance. This album is a praise album and to respect the lyrics, you have to respect that. He's not going to be trying to twist it to re-adapt gospel like he did on songs like Jesus Walks or Only One. it's pure worship but I think that focus makes the album better, not worse. In a way throwing in a NMPILA-type verse, as much as it would make me happy, would cheapen what the album is going for.
I also think it's impressive that he's still finding ways to make albums that hold their own against his discography this far in. It might not be as good as TCD, MBDTF, 808s etc. but it's something else entirely so it's a worthy addition. That's a real special talent to still be adding to your body of work in that kind of meaningful way. This album makes him one of the most exciting artists in hip hop again for me after a shaky 2018.
Yeah, when people say the lyrics themselves are bad I just ask myself what were they expecting on a christian album worshiping jesus, prayers are always pretty straightforward since they convey directly a feeling of gratitude, worship and praise, and In a way I feel Kanye is doing the same here. The verse on water for example, despite his delivery, has a really good verse to me cause it feels like a prayer, and in the context of the song I feel it fits perfectly.
And as an album, I was surprised by the fact it sounds pretty different from every other album he released, even though it has some really slight 808's/tlop on it. It's crazy he can reinvent himself with a new sound after 15 years, and I think this will make the album remembered in time. Even though at this moment I prefer ye, I feel that album is gonna be overlooked over time, as it's not presenting anything new and its a subtle album in itself. This one instead marks the beginning of a new era, and doing so with an album this different from the ones that came before it is honestly great, makes the turn in his career even more powerful

Idk, I'm the kind of person that loved the croissants line, the bleached a****** line, and the without c***line. So I love the Chick Fil A line. I think people hate it just because it doesn't sound like the sort of thing a rapper should say. It's a punchline, deal with it
Hmm not sure why you wrote that to me because I said I liked the song. But, since you called me out, I want to add that corny punchlines, are corny.
