I think after TMZ Ye went to try and get back to those roots, and detach from everything... in doing so he found God, and immediately attached himself to Christianity as a form of sudo-validation.... he even said when he was in UCLA he wrote down that he needed to ‘start a church’
I still think deep down he wants to serve himself, but it’s easier to let God survey the path
