Kari Faux: “StickUp!”
Kari Faux’s new mixtape, Lowkey Superstar, finds her trying something new on each song: dusty boom bap, minimal R&B, spaced-out Missy-isms. “StickUp!” is a standout, as Kari whispers her taunts over a sinister beat. “Thought you was smart, thought you was a scholar/Don’t lose your s*** over a couple of dollars/Look what you did, turned me into a robber/Ain’t no more talkin’ so don’t even bother,” she says, her flow never staying in one place for long. The verses complement her sharp and catchy hook, which would set live shows on fire under different circumstances. Right now, though, we can only hope for an Instagram Live performance.

Low Key Conversation: Kari Faux Interviewed
Little Rock native on her new mixtape and trans-Atlantic creativity...
Last year all the hype was around Kari Faux's new album.
Fans waited with baited breath for more details, but then the Little Rock polymath through them a curveball.
Shelving the project, she returned instead with her phenomenal new mixtape 'Low Key Superstar'.
Out now, it's a pitch perfect return, one that amplifies the trans-Atlantic conversation between respective underground cultures in the UK and the here in the UK.
Of course, it's 100% unapologetic in its approach, with Kari Faux bringing fire at every turn.
Clash caught up with her to see what's what.
What inspired this current project and what made you shelve the previous one?
After I made the album in London last summer, Danio and I kept making more music together.
These new set of songs were super fun and easy to make so I had the idea of making a mixtape and releasing it first before putting out the album. I love the album and it's still coming out at some point.
What can fans expect from this project?
Fun music. On this project, I had no reservations about just being the most relaxed version of myself. I usually take my music making very seriously but this time I did that AND had fun with it.
The first single from the project is called ‘While God Was Sleepin’, what made you release this song?
'While God Was Sleepin'...' is the most different sonically from the rest of the project but it is a great introduction to future sounds you'll hear from me on the album.
It's a bit of foreshadowing. I also feel like a rockstar so it was fun to make a song with punk undertones.
What makes this project different from the others you’ve released?
The confidence in who I am as an artist and a woman just cuts through on this project. I love the others but I just got it so right with this one and it was quite effortless.
Were there any challenges faced whilst recording?
Ha! My biggest challenge was procrastination. I was in London for a total of eight days. We produced, wrote and recorded every song in six days. I knew if I didn't finish the music while I was with Danio in London, it wasn't gonna get done correctly or be as special.
So, I pushed myself to write everything in such a short time frame and honestly, I ended up writing some of my favorite stuff.
What’s the most valuable lesson learnt whilst recording this project?
Don't take everything so seriously. I had the most fun making this stuff because we weren't trying too hard to make anything and ended up making something very special, in my opinion.
