A lot of people will be openly gay but try do paint an image of them being one of the “good gays” if that makes sense to try and appeal to hetero and conservative leaving people. Thinking specifically in the direction of gay women, my boy’s older sister has always been a very open lesbian. But whenever she refers to gay men she has a strong hatred towards them and only refers to them as slurs. It’s many angles to it but it’s definitely a thing
