Not really and like I said it’s desperation doing it for a surprise dance album Vs the artists who meant to be dudes competition main releases

Niggas thirsty for a drake run end 💀

    Surprise dance album
    Dance side project

What else have y'all been calling this release

Just take the L gracefully damn. Drake tried something different and people wasn't feeling it. Not that deep just accept it

Yall call 808s experimental cuz man threw some pop synths in them songs 😂

nah this ain't it. "experimental" is more than just doing a completely different genre

An artist can be experimental within their own genre. you can't tell me 808's wasnt
an experimental hiphop album, especially at the time it was made

At the time it was made it was very experimental

Everyone wants to talk about how 808s isn't experimental and actually bit this and that artist but can't name a single album that sounds like it

"This was clearly a side project"

    Well Drake’s album sucked

And Kendrick is no longer relevant to the culture outside of a brief period of curiosity after a 5 year hiatus.

Both things can be true and all that trolling in the world won’t change it.

Just like yall saying wait and see when Drake comes back with another rap album - wait until Kendrick comes back with an album that actually tries to capture listeners before you say something like that Because MM&TBS is not an easy listen and has a lot of controversy around it but some of yall were quick to say he's not top 3 anymore based off his numbers

there are like 3 tracks on 808s that you could call experimental rap

its not really a rap album

5 years of promo brother. The game and culture at large has moved past the need for him.

He’s not relevant to the sound in hip hop and lost his grip on the youth.

And yes, people tend to give Drake a bit more leeway off the strength of doing 600k less than a year ago.

Can’t say I have the same confidence in Kendrick’s ability to bounce back

By doing this, they’re setting themselves up for the biggest L of all time when Drake’s next album sells less than 600K, which it almost certainly will, between new billboard rules and lack of Donda vs. CLB stimulus. They’ll just end up calling it a playlist though when it happens because delusion knows no bounds.

Damn, we got Nostradamus in this b****

gen Z gravitates towards people who at least have the appearance of being authentically interesting and controversial

neither of them fit that bill but kendrick is in an especially rough spot because he isnt a hitmaker either, so he doesnt really capture the crowd that just listens to music w/o any regard for the discussions and narratives

By virtue of being young adults or adolescents gen Z gravitates towards rappers who are bit more emotionally vulnerable and can make hits (Also why pain rap is so huge rn)

Lost a lot of talent in XXX, Peep and JuiceWrld

yeah I was def simplifying a lot, theres a bunch of trends going on at once and when they all coincide you get a (future) superstar like XXX

but kendrick just doesnt hit any of those notes, isnt making hits and isnt making music that impacts off of sheer critical acclaim like an MBDTF or whatever

so hes kind of just fading into the ether. at least the crown of thorns gave people something to talk about lol

  • Jul 3, 2022

its interesting though because the album was vulnerable in a sense but not necessarily in the sense that people are looking for

hes almost a victim of his own thinking because the people are looking for in the moment vibes not "I meditated on my depression and trauma for five years and here are my thoughts"

    Black Panther album for starters

Then whatever that Oklahoma Pg lang nonsense

    And that Michael jordan announcement

Point being this wasn’t a surprise drop. It wasn’t announced at 10 pm on a Thursday.

He had 5 years of anticipation following his most commercially successful project, and released another installment to his heart series.

Like I said before, he just isn’t relevant to the culture anymore.

And making an album with deep concepts doesn’t excuse it being bad and unlistenable.
