So it morgan wallen's sales just not dropping? wtf
He's the greatest artist of 2023, bar none.
Rap is quickly going down the path of Rock
But unlike Rock there isn’t heavy gate keeping when it comes to new sounds.
So Rap needs a huge shift in sound (mostly in the positive side) to keep up in the change in culture that’s happening in the US.
Hip Hop isn't as dominant in the mainstream, but it's still the most listened to genre by a good margin. I honestly would mind this genre going the way of Rock, where you could have a Top 5 Urban hit and not crack the top 50 on the Hot 100. That happened regularly before the mid 2000s.
I think the artists and labels would be forced to start focusing on core Hip Hop instead of catering to the casual fans
that’s the funny s*** because people on here would always rail against gate keepers just in general, when they’re needed to insure artists can put out quality and also carry the torches of the previous gens before them
now it’s so diluted and homogeneous we need a miracle
I’m not a big fan of gatekeepers but the rate of rappers coming and going is out of control as of late.
these are all points that were made up and down music sxn, except you had opium d***riders, RYM preachers and plugnb truthers essentially telling you everything is fine and you just gotta look underground for good music
funny asf it had to manifest in this way for people to take notice (and even then there’s still people in denial that anything is up about the genre)
Bro most of the underground s*** stinks. It's mainly kids hyping that s*** up. If this new underground gen was as cold they said, they'd have blasted off the way X, Uzi, Juice, and Carti did within a year but instead they stuck in the underground

yeah it is largely awful, derivative music (which is yet another thing that was said in music sxn) but when you say that, you just get dismissed as a boomer/washed although people even my age aren’t really f***ing with that s*** either, it’s fairly niche lmao
plugnb, (as it currently is, anyways) opium, and whatever flavor of the month abstract RYM rapper they’re hyping up in the underground have no mainstream appeal, doesn’t take an A&R to parse that out
With the rise and success of country music this year do y'all see more hip hop artists collaborating with country artists like lil durk did? Seems like a sure way to get a hit right now

As long as it sounds like this
TikTok and HipHop peaked in 2020
Both declining since
TikTok is bigger than ever lol
TikTok is bigger than ever lol
Lol what?
There was a digital surge during the pandemic.

that was the year it was the most downloaded app, yes
But yearly downloads would be a poor metric for a social media company
Engagement, revenue and active user count is higher than the pandemic

Engagement/average time spent on the app would be the best indicator.
Not sure where you'd find that info on a private Chinese company but:

Active user base it’s at its highest
They release their revenue publicly, they’ve have year over year magnification in growth
Saying it’s declining is purely a product of your own bubble.

Edit: cba arguing over Tiktok tbh.
