so CD sales are a gimmick too as well ? lmao
Young people aren't buying CDs to listen to the music that way though
It's a gimmick if they aren't listening to the music that way, no?
No, some people like to support their favorite artist in ways that aren’t passive, some people like a physical representation of the music they enjoy, it’s not a gimmick whatsoever
Streaming can be manipulated, and it’s inaccurate in that: the number to designate one “sale” is a totally made up figure, paid streams are worth more than free streams, and it creates an endless amount of “sales” because every time you play an album enough times it’s an additional sale.
Pure sales can definitely be manipulated/incentivized as well, but a sale is a sale is a sale. You can’t fake a transaction.
Record labels literally have history of faking cd sales lol, it's extremely common and has been happening for decades
Calling vinyl a gimmick because streaming exists is the equivalent of calling physical books a gimmick because Kindles exist. It’s just a ridiculous assertion.

Right, which has absolutely nothing to do with music CONSUMPTION lmao.

I swear y’all are remedial because I’ve said ten times ITT now that the two metrics measure two different things

What an insane comparision lmao, a huge % of people still prefer reading physical books rather than using a kindle
who the f*** you know listening to Utopia from a CD/vinyl bro?

It doesn’t matter what people prefer, that doesn’t make the less preferred option a “gimmick”, that’s actually insane and lowkey dystopian as s***

By this definition, literally any type of promotion/marketing is a gimmick

Yes? pretty much
no one's buying a Utopia vinyl to listen to the music, they're buying it to supppor the artist or throw that s*** on their wall as decoration lol
it's completely different to why people were buying vinyls/cds 30 years ago, dunno how anyone can disagree w/ that

The reasoning for purchase is irrelevant, doesn’t make the product a gimmick.
Also, if any type of promotion/marketing is a gimmick then your entire point is moot.
Trav outsold huh
Trav had them bundles released a whole movie for it
Anywhow great for them both.

Maybe but it has nothing to do w/ listening to the actual music, therefor it's completely goofy to me
Billboard might as well start letting hoodie sales and concert tickets count as album sales too

so physical sales should be removed ?
so physical sales should be removed ?
If Billboard is a measure of consumption, then yes
if Billboard is a measure of who has the most insane fans then no, but in that case they should include things like hoodies/concerts which will make it even more accurate

And this brings me back to the main point, that streaming measures a DIFFERENT METRIC and that it has nothing to do with pure sales.
Sales numbers are not “how many times is this song getting played”, it’s literally just how many times a sale was made. That’s it. Full stop.

Billboard is a measure of sales.
Streaming measures consumption.
Pure sales measures sales.
Two different categories, should not be conflated, both can co-exist.
Billboard is a measure of sales.
Do they still say that? last time I saw they were saying theyre a measure of consumption

According to them, consumption is included under sales, which is something I don’t agree with

Yea exactly s***'s dumb, I wish they just separated the charts properly years ago
