Ain’t no way complicated and skater boy took 20 years to go platinum
Odds on it going back to number 1?
Any potential releases that could stop it?

The RIAA needs to either introduce a certification above Diamond for 20X, or change the Diamond cert number to 20X. The amount of songs going Diamond via streaming is getting silly now

Going Diamond isn't easy.
Going Diamond isn't easy.
It’s not, but it is becoming remarkably common in the streaming era. It’s like every other week another song is going Diamond.
RIAA needs to change their qualifications to reflect the never-ending sales that streaming brings. Something like introducing an end-date of when songs can stop receiving new sales via streaming, not that the artist wouldn’t get paid for them, but they would no longer count towards the total RIAA figure. Like 5 or 10 years post-release. Or just adding a new Certification status above Diamond, or making the Diamond number 20 or 25 million.
The amount of Diamond songs there will be by 2035 will be a laughable number if they keep using these outdated rules

That doesn't mean they need to change their criteria for what counts as a Diamond certification. You need at least 1.5B US streams for a song to cross 10M units sold in the US. A song in the Hot 100 top 10 right now averages about 20-30M US streams weekly, some songs with a ton of radio airplay average even less than that. It takes a long time for most songs to reach the benchmark to be eligible for a Diamond certification, especially songs that weren't huge smash hits during the streaming boom from 2016-2019. Outside of that, it's a good representation of what song has been consumed steadily over time. I don't think any changes need to be made.

They will need to change it when going Diamond seems like a dime and dozen thing. It’s their highest qualification, it shouldn’t seem like every other week a new song is going Diamond or getting very near Diamond (which is exactly what’s been happening this year).
The amount of songs that have went Diamond in the streaming era alone is laughable

They won't be changing anything. What you're forgetting is that many songs going Diamond are songs from 2015/2016/2017. These aren't new songs. Most of them aren't from this decade so it's taken them at least 5 years to reach that benchmark. All that shows is that they've been steadily consumed since their release and that's impressive because there are literally millions of songs released globally every month in the streaming era. To be able to get people to keep listening to a particular song year after year until it garners enough streams to be certified Diamond, is a great achievement and not one that comes easily.

People already think the number of streams to equal an album sale is too low.

Post Malone had 8 songs go Diamond in a 7-year period, including one that went double Diamond. It’s getting ridiculous.
I’m not saying it’s not an achievement, it’s just diluting the prestige of the title when it’s becoming so commonplace for it to happen.
The amount of Diamond songs there will be by 2035/2040 will be an absolutely ridiculous number if these rules don’t change

Or they could do like streams after 5 years are worth less then after 10 years even less instead of just not counting them.

That’s not a bad idea either. Something needs to change. If all of these songs just have never-ending sales there will quite literally be a thousand Diamond songs by the end of the 2030s.
By August 2022 there were 82 total Diamond songs.
By May 2024 there were 138. Not including the records that have been certified Diamond over the past couple months.
The number almost doubled in a two year period

All of those post malone songs are huge. Streaming era single certs will be higher compred to physicals era because every time you play and album you are increasing the songs units as well. But album sales/units are down instead for the most part.

Yea there will be a lot but this is assuming the streams stable but people are listening to these songs so it goes both ways imo. Like if you look at apple music chart a lot of old songs are there.

That’s fair, but it feels disingenuous to me. What other industry allows longterm sales via a streaming method? The box office total for Infinity War doesn’t go up every time someone watches it on Disney Plus

Also tbf there are albums that are 30 and 40x platinum

box office is more equivalent to first week sales imo
