HDD had the album at 3.7M units in 2018, 1.2M units in 2019 and 700k+ units in 2020 (it should be noted that HDD's year-to-date numbers don't cover the entire year. They're sometimes up to 4-6 weeks off.

Scorpion did about 6M units in its first 3 years of release. If you add in the 1.1M units the album did from God's Plan/Nice for What/I'm Upset prior to the album's release, it was eligible for 7x Platinum certification by the end of 2020. It's moved about 8.3-8.5M units right now in the US.

The 3.9M units Scorpion did in 2018 doesn't include pre-album release numbers. Look at the first of the 3 HDD graphics I posted. Look down right. They also note it that the numbers in their top 50 albums of the year list don't include pre-album release data. Nielsen also doesn't regard pre-album release date when tallying it's numbers. They start counting from when an album drops. Only RIAA regards pre-album release data because that factors into their certifications.

Read this page, it clears things up. Go down to bestselling albums by year. The numbers marked in yellow refer to album equivalent units (SPS) numbers, because in some years one album sold more in pure sales only while another sold more in SPS so both are credited as the bestselling albums of that particular year.

How is that insane? You forget Drake dropped twice in 2015, again in 2016 (where he had the bestselling album of the year), again in 2017 and again in 2018. His album activity dropped that much because there are multiple projects for fans to give their time and attention to.
