No, you’re avoiding an answer because you know how it would completely dismantle what you’re saying.
The labeling of a song or album on DSPs has absolutely no correlation to what the actual genre of that song or album is, because there are things such as skin color and industry politics that influence what genre a release gets labeled as.
Nobody with two working ears would describe Blinding Lights as an R&B song, yet it’s still labeled as such on DSPs.
It’s a pop record, and therefore its’ commercial performance will be judged on that scale, not on an R&B scale simply because the DSP says that’s what it is
- Weeknd has made R&B music throughout his career consistently
- Has a well established R&B fanbase
- Had just as much appeal with R&B listeners as Bey, SZA, etc.
Every single one of his albums has R&B songs to some extent.
You want him to be a pure Pop artist only because it makes his numbers look better. You are ironically boxing him in one genre like you claim DSPs do.
He makes crossover music and has an audience overlap very similar to someone like Drake
