Wrong again. This conversation started because you said that the commercial performance of $$$4U and Hurry Up Tomorrow should be compared since they are both R&B albums.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is not an R&B album.

He has not released an R&B album in 12 years.

I never said he didn’t still have R&B songs on these albums.

Wrong. I said the “Pop artist excuse” doesn’t work for The Weeknd, because he has made multiple genres of music throughout his career, and consistently appealed to the same R&B/Hip-Hop demographic of someone like Drake, SZA, Beyonce, etc.

He is not a Shawn Mendes type vanilla Pop artist who truly only makes straight Pop music.

Weeknd is associated with Metro Boomin, Future, Kendrick, Drake, etc. Plenty of fans of those artists would also play new music by him in a heartbeat.

You would never hear a true “solely Pop” artist on those playlists next to those artists with any of their music

You’re assuming that “Pop” automatically means vanilla pop music. That sounds like a you problem.

The Weeknd is a pop artist who makes pop albums. Hope this helps.

    Because it does lmao.

If you’re going by a broad nonsensical version then Drake & Kendrick are also “pop artist” so.

No, I’m talking about the genre of pop music.

Kendrick Lamar has never made a song like Blinding Lights or Open Hearts

Do you realize that Michael Jackson was a pop artist as well?

Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes, Tate McRae = straight up Pop artists

Weeknd, Rihanna, SZA = artists who make crossover music that often appeals to Pop

    Hope this helps

Full R&B albums at any point, dozens of R&B/Hip-Hop collabs, and R&B/Hip-Hop songs on every single album = crossover act with different genres

Jason Derulo would be an example of a fully Pop black artist.

I have literally never said that once.

Black artists get boxed into RAP and R&B and SOUL.

Saying a black artist is a Pop artist is not a racist statement because that is not a genre they routinely get lumped into due to the color of their skin

  • The reality is that factually the majority of black mainstream artists don’t do just one genre.

Black artists generally have to be diverse musically and multi-faceted to rise to the top.

White artists can get by on making the one same sound for an entire career and being mainstream level huge

By “crossover” you are trying to say “this person’s skin is black so they appeal to black people who like rap and R&B music”

Yep. And even then, it still has multiple Hip-Hop songs.

I would not find it unreasonable for someone to deem Drake does various different genres and shouldn’t be solely classified as Rap/a rapper lmao.

You can include him in discussions on rappers and discussions on pop stars.
