They spent the better part of the last 15 years forming a whole identity around "numbers don't matter" until their guy started putting up some numbers

Kendrick has obviously chased mainstream success but he’s also shunned it and went in the opposite direction.

He could’ve made GKMC 2 but he went back and made TPAB with the funk and jazz influence, he could’ve made DAMN 2 but he went and did Mr Morale with songs like World wide steppers, crown, mother I sober, etc.

He’s a mainstream rapper and has chased commercial hits but he’s never done it in the same vein as other rappers like Drake

Most of the discussion ITT has always been related to Kendrick/Drake. It started with Kendrick, thread was moving faster than ever when MM projections and first week sales came in, then it happened again when HNVM numbers came in. Most of the discussion in here has been clowning and rubbing it in since the thread was made. Had this thread never been created, you would not see this many Kendrick stans talking about numbers on here.

Worth mentioning that as chart obsessed as you are claiming Kendrick stans are now, I've never seen any of them try to say high sales must = the music is good like you did

THIS. Like, there's no fanbase who won't brag about their fave putting up massive numbers, especially when they're the biggest in a given space or genre. Swifties don't need to put down any other female artists for other pop stans to feel triggered by their constant bragging about Taylor's numbers, so whenever and for whatever reason some other female artist has a song performing better than a current Taylor Swift song, you'll see stans of other female artists trying to get their lick in by shading Taylor.

Drake fans have never needed to rub his success in anyone's face because he's always been the biggest and the most successful of his generation. DAMN drops and outsells More Life and all of a sudden, Kendrick fans take that as a cue to shade Drake like he didn't just do 1M+ units first week less than a year earlier so yes, when the Scorpion era comes around and he thoroughly dominates the entire year, guess what happens? Drake fans throw shade back.

That's really how this whole thing started. MMATBS was announced and Kendrick fans again made it about Drake and outdoing him. Their delusional takes about what the album would do commercially is the reason why I made this thread in the first place. The album drops and underperforms (not to my surprise) and everybody (not just Drake stans this time around) mock the numbers because mocking numbers is par for the course on this site.

Honestly, Nevermind drops and this thread gains like 2,000 pages in 3 days because of the mindless trolling of those numbers. Her Loss drops and it's silence. For All the Dogs drops and it's silence.

We don't see Kendrick fans trying to mock Drake's numbers again until Not Like Us becomes a hit. But don't let any of them sell you on the lie that they've never cared about numbers. They always have. They've always wanted Kendrick to dominate like Drake does, that's why they never shut up whenever he does anything noteworthy numbers-wise but then turn around and get mad at Drake fans for bragging about his numbers all the time when he's been the biggest in the space for 15 straight years lol.
