Because their 'global' methodology entails converting music revenue (which is already adjusted for pre sale) to U.S $ value effectively making 1 stream from a poorer country worth a fraction of one from a rich one. Maybe racist wasn't the right term but the chart does not represent popular music globally just privileged countries that earn more; otherwise you'd be seeing Latin and Indian artists on there.

But back to the topic, using IFPI and a service half the size of Spotify with numbers nobody knows to gauge popularity is laughable

Her entire argument is laughable because her thesis is Bad Bunny isn’t bigger than Drake worldwide. Then she just uses metrics that are American/western centric without even realizing her data collection errors.

Surpassed Drake how? Don't let those Spotify numbers deceive you. There are several streaming services Bad Bunny doesn't dominate.

    1) There’s a reason most of these artists are in North America — streaming numbers disproportionally favor NA artists since sales elsewhere are made AGAINST US sales. You have to also account for technology and access to streaming in other countries. Also the streaming companies are mostly based and made in North America. Therefore, you have to take IFPI’s numbers with a grain of salt. Go to other parts of the world and see who they’re listening to (in their cars, at parties, on vinyls, through live music covers etc.). If that’s too hard, go to people in America who speak languages other than english and/or are 1/2 generation immigrants and learn what music they listen to.

If your first reaction to this chart, is “wow Drake is the third most popular artist in the world in 2020” then you’re reading this chart wrong. Instead, read it like “According to IFPI’s data collection methodology, which favors western-centric artists who market to consumers who predominantly use streaming, Drake is the third most popular artist”.

    2) Don’t discredit Latin America’s sales accreditation. If Drake could sell 24 million albums in Latin American according to Latin American RIAA then you’d have an argument, but he can’t even come close. Yes, it’s not 1-to-1 to US sales but it more than demonstrates his worldwide appeal in a way we haven’t seen before, especially since he’s entering English-speaking markets in a competitive fashion to top English-speaking artists. (Someone ITT shared those 2021 Spotify numbers which help my point here). If an artist can be 20+ platinum and diamond in one region of the world, begin to dominate the western world, and potentially move to eastern markets, then yes, he’s the biggest artist in the world. I wouldn’t even put Drake second in this case, second would go to BTS.

    3) I’m not going to go back and forth with you, but you tried to make your point, and here is mine. Let the thread make their own conclusions.

The fact that Future now has 8 number one albums in the past 7 years is crazy. Truly a legend

Trying to compare Drake and Bad Bunny is crazy. They don’t even speak the same language. They’re not competing in the same markets. It’s like trying to compare Brady and LeBron

There’s like 100 million more Spanish than English speakers and like ten times less competition in the Spanish hip hop market. They’re playing different games

I don’t hold it against benito that Drakes sales trounce his in a primarily English speaking country either cause that would be equally dumb

If so, we never need to listen to HDD again, their numbers are a fugazi.
