The album had 19 songs and more than a handful of slappers on it that should have easily carried it to a 350-400k debut, especially because it was his first album in 5 years and has a s*** ton of hype going into its release.

A producer’s album is only going to be as hot as the features it has.
Prime Quincy Jones wouldn’t be able to deliver a platinum album if it was just album of instrumentals.
Casual listeners may know OF the ppl making the beats. But they don’t give af about the guy making the beats. Especially in 2025. They care if the mainstream rappers on the beat.
I suppose that you could argue he could have gotten a hotter song out of who he had feature. But an album that don’t doesn’t have hit singles with current day hot artists isn’t gonna sell like that

Thank you. I don’t care who you are, if you’re a producer, you are not moving major units unless the features on said project are major. If Metro dropped a completely instrumental album right now, that s*** would not clear 10K units first week. That’s just how it is.

Drake is one of the best-selling artists in the history of the music industry. He should absolutely be held to a different commercial standard than any of his peers. I don’t get what is so hard to understand about that.
If Taylor Swift dropped an album tomorrow that did 200K first week, it would be seen as an egregious failure
