would you have called Drake a pop artist who rapped when he wanted in 2016?
So you're using 1 album era for Drake vs. 3 album eras for Doja Cat? Room for Improvement, Comeback Season, So Far Gone, Thank Me Later, Nothing Was the Same, If You're Reading This It's Too Late, What a Time to Be Alive are all rap releases. Even if you don't categorize Views as one, More Life, Scorpion, Dark Lane Demo Tapes and Certified Lover Boy are also rap releases. That's not counting the dozens of rap features Drake has done. Comparing him to Doja Cat is insulting. Why?
1. Drake has released A LOT more rap music than Doja Cat ever has and probably ever will.
2. Drake is the most dominant rap artist in hip-hop history and he managed that making mostly rap music.
3. It's not that hard to understand that it's very possible for an artist to have rap verses and still not be categorized as a rapper (Chris Brown, Ed Sheeran, Fergie, Beyoncè are all singers who have rapped several times in songs before but no one categorizes them as rappers because most of their discography has them singing).Doja Cat is a talented artist. Whether she's singing, dancing or rapping — she's clearly gifted at it but she doesn't rap nearly enough to be considered a rapper the way many of her peers like Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, etc.
I'll give you this example: Cardi can have 3 R&B songs on her next album and guess what? No one will call her an R&B singer. That's how it works with Doja Cat and being labelled a rapper. It's totally fine if she sees herself as a rapper. She should just not be offended or upset when other people don't see her that way.
Nicki made pop songs as well and has sang as well but she established herself as a rapper first and she has countless classic feature rap verses under her belt where she's eating up male rappers. She was never afraid of that smoke and her discography as well is more than 70% rap so no one in their right mind can take away her rap pedigree.
If Doja Cat wants that, all she has to do is rap A WHOLE LOT MORE than she sings moving forward and it'd also help if she had some memorable rap verses because I really can't name a single Doja Cat rap verse that's ever stuck with me. I can't even remember her lines.

Even if her biggest songs are pop songs, there's nothing wrong with that. You can say the same for Nicki. The main difference is that Doja Cat simply hasn't RAPPED enough and doesn't make enough RAP MUSIC to be categorized as a rapper. Anybody can rap. That doesn't automatically make them a rapper. Countless singers throughout music history have rapped on songs yet they're never seen as rappers because rap music doesn't make up most of their discography. That's all it is.
No one is saying she can't sing and rap but even someone like Drake that raps WAY MORE than he sings still gets s*** about not being a rapper and that's Drake who has been running the rap game for the last 14 years and has more that 250+ RAP SONGS to his name. How more Doja Cat?

Instead of just looking at rapping like Doja, I looked at actual hiphop songs with mostly rapping in them (aka his verses). Across Lil Nas X’s 31 songs in his entire discography there are 14 hiphop songs with primarily rapping on them. 4 of those songs are from his studio discography which has 21 songs @Nessy

Well, that's not a good example because Drake released two bonafide rap mixtapes before Views dropped, not to talk about the 3 rap albums he released before that.
You're acting like Planet Her is Doja Cat's first album. It's not. It's actually her third, plus she has an EP she dropped in 2014 so people have a sizeable amount of songs to go on. It's not like she's just straight rapping on every other album except her latsst album.
Amala (her debut album) is mostly R&B records. By Hot Pink (her sophomore album) she started making more pop-leaning records with a couple of R&B records on the side and by Planet Her (her third album) she fully dived into making pop music so there was never a time since she came out as "Doja Cat" that we've seen her RAP or drop albums that have her mostly rapping so why should anyone see her as a rapper?
Also, just to be clear, the ability to rap does not make you a rapper. ANYBODY can rap. That doesn't automatically make you a rap artist. Like I said earlier, countless singers over the last 30+ years have rapped or sang over hip-hop influenced beats or used rap inflections when singing — none of those things makes them a rap artist. The point is that culturally, he isn't a rap artist. He's an R&B singer who raps on songs sometimes. That's what you don't seem to be getting.
This whole debate is really simple to understand. Can Doja Cat rap? Absolutely. Is she a rap artist? F*** no. Is it possible to have several songs of you rapping and still not be regarded as a rap artist? Absolutely.
