Hip hop going back underground. Not mad at it tbh. I think commercials using so much 20 year old rap/rnb songs are also making them uncool to young people though, the way 60s/70s rock songs were used in 90s/00s commercials

This isn't a good thing lol. Hip-hop has been mainstream since the late 80s. Now, is a song not charting in the top 40 for the first time in 35 years a sign of total doom? No. That's just Billboard rage baiting but this is something record label folks have been speaking on for the last 3 or so years — the divestment of rap music. Most record labels have gotten rid of the people who used to run the rap/hip-hop arms of their companies. They aren't investing in rappers as much as they used to and so the infrastructure isn't there anymore. That means, it'll be even harder for a new star to rise and provide a jolt to the game because the finance and structure to do that on a mainstream level will no longer be there. Yes, there'll always be people making noise in their respective niches but none of that will be enough to ever translate into legit mainstream success, which is really what matters.

That also means less money, less opportunities, etc. Certain established mainstream rappers will be fine because they have back catalogs that'll continue to carry them but as if that wasn't enough, Billboard is also implementing chart rules that don't favor rappers so s*** will be really bleak moving forward.

None of that is good for rap or hip-hop.

Rather have the top rap artist be irrelevant in mainstream than making slave lines and d***riding Adin Ross and Nell boys.

Funny how they went from Drake is still on top and a hit maker to Kendrick killed hiphop and ruined the charts in just a years time

Those Travis feats might as well had been AI

Don't worry, it won't be long. Remember how many of y'all clowned DLDT for selling 223k units first week and now that's a figure even the biggest mainstream acts in rap are struggling to reach? Lmao.

In an alternate universe where Drake is actually better than Kendrick and actually beat him in the battle somehow

How does that save the charts?

It wouldn’t because Drake was active while the decline began

I'm not happy about it. I just know it's unavoidable. Doesn't matter how I feel about it, this is something that's been staring us at the face for years now. I've brought it up on here since at least 2022, how detrimental it would be to rap if we didn't get some new blood who could establish themselves and carry the genre. I've spoken about how bad it was to still be relying on the same people for the past 15-20 years to carry the genre in the mainstream space.

Pop music is popping out stars every f***ing year. The same can be said about country music. Meanwhile, rap isn't doing s***. It was always gonna happen and next year will be the most glaring example of what I'm talking about.

The same thing happened before the emergence of Drake, Nicki, Kendrick, Cole, Cudi, Big Sean, Rocky etc. Hip Hop was losing its dominance and labels were starting to push EDM.

The lack of new talent in Hip Hop is worrying. So much young people are gravitating towards country, Latin music, and Pop. People who only shift their focus for superstars like Kendrick. I’m not sure how new rappers are supposed to thrive in this market.
