Idgaf about sales for none of this s*** but this album is DEFINITELY not his most mainstream sounding album lol.

I’m telling yall the fact an album that sounds like this selling over 250k is an accomplishment in itself. As someone that lives here, gnx aint resonating with a lotta new yorkers (and I understand why tbh. Especially if this aint the specific cali sound that you like)

But this also is why we do need regionality back so much.

Most of that is BECAUSE they are white and are guests in a predominantly black culture. It’s not because of the color of their skin obviously, it’s their cultural paradigm that is incompatible

I like the way you put that. Would you say that you can still learn and grow a better understanding through history and conversation? it’s clear they want the most surface level conversation about everything. And I feel any type of historical context and understanding / better exposure to more art would make even the slightest more interesting conversations between them.

ill be honest, i dont really like the white narrative s***. while its obvious that black artists and musicians are successful and some have made it on their own and what not, to say that white people have no style or anything at all is ridiculous, considering the business is ran predominantly by them, and all of the most famous and largest acts are in large part found and put on by white people, that alone tells you that they are at least somewhat tapped in or have some kind of understanding, and have helped magnify the careers of many BECAUSE of the vision.

there will always be somewhat of a disconnect between cultures and races, it is expected and probably a good thing. But when you have an ear or an eye it is undeniable and race does not factor into that.

forreal, s*** i also been saying the last 2 years too

me n mitch had a good convo too n this what i said to him as well in his frusturation of people trying t prop the few "deep" songs over everything without any real reason:

"theyre just trying to make anything seem deeper, as usual

when the album is mostly about his roots - from how most of the album he switches literally from LA and Bayarea sounds, styles, lingo n references back n forth - to the west only feats besides sza n no industry people - to the buick gnx a rpized car to CA especially back in the 2000s when kendrick grew up - to the tde and gloria song - while continuing off of his pop out concert purpose and NLU mash of styles and emphasis on the culture you are actually from

his most straight froward, from the town album

yet internet-only schzio backpack rap "fans" still trying to ruin it, just like with damn era

anyways the whole state going up! and nigga gonna turn the super bowl into a shoot out function with this album"

s*** validates tf outta me too personally because ive always like a nigga with balance - one of the reason Kanye is literally my fav along with 2Pac and Kendrick

ive always perferred a nigga that got a book, but hides a knife in it

why i never been hot on overly rappy niggas like Lupe or Blu (although i do like stuff from them and respect it) - AND especially the rapper that raps about rap type niggas

my favs arent staright up "ignorant" niggas (although i do enjoy s*** like gucci and dem franchize boyz), but i dont like straight up "smart" niggas either

my top 3 in the 2010s was kendrick, asap rocky and big krit

along with those 3 my favs of all time is full of niggas like 2pac, kanye, dmx, 50 cent, lil wayne, mac mall, scarface, master p, camron, mob deep, jay z, outkast, pusha t, schoolboy q, mac miller (from macadelic forward), ice cube, future, spice 1, nas, waka flocka etc. off top of my head

niggas that are "smart" but also still talkin reality
and have an actual identity n still like fun every now n then

while niggas like gangstarr, black thought (i love roots phernology + and then you shoot your cousin albums), lupe (mainly T&Y) n a few others i listen to every now and then

and why i got a big beef with internet-only schizo backpack "rap fans"

and i got a slight distain with niggas with no actual background or basis in the genre/culture

its just different - and also you cant really get it - especially something like gnx that is so drenched in its roots and culture that you cant figure out so it comes off "random" and has to "mean somthing else" cuz you starting from zero and outside

down to they dont even get the basic of the car on the cover thus they try to tie it to some off the wall random s*** that has nothing to do with nothing

    Saved. Great post as usual

This is part of my argument too. You said it better I suppose.

Most people can not tell the difference between Monet and Manet (I understand this is paintings and we’re talking about music but that’s also the point).

When you have a culture that’s artistically deprived, this is the result you get.

most of my cross culture and talks among people of different races are always pretty deep and insightful, its only a loud minority that is spotlighted tbh. some things no one will ever "feel", but you dont have to, the understanding is the only really important part. being open minded and receptive to things is the way forward, unfortunately there is plenty of media and other agendas that get pushed to keep everyone at arms length.

i think wording it as "most" people is kind of a wrong thing to say, you know? simply because you are talking about something that not a majority of people are educated on in the first place

i get your point though, while i can agree, im not sure how artistically deprived one culture is vs another when you consider time and dif eras.

Didn’t even consider how certain Drake stans would be seething and fuming in the mouth listening to Kendrick saying he deserves all the good s*** in life on Man in the garden.

I suppose that’s correct. When I said “most” I am referring to people on large platforms discussing art. I just would like to believe if you’re having a platform to discuss art to a large audience that you would have that proper education and understanding. Not saying you need to be a scholar or even have taken classes for that, but rather just more read up and exposed on art and music history

Yes. I have white friends that actually give a f*** and I respect their opinions on this stuff but it’s because they have been around black culture their whole lives

Not really lol. You might have a better understanding but nothing trumps direct lived experience of the culture. The best you can do is move with respect and appeal to your base who relates to your perspective, which is one that is based on someone outside of the culture looking in. And there is nothing wrong with that per se, that perspective is valid. The problem is when that perspective becomes the DEFAULT perspective we take when a***yzing the quality of OUR music. We need more representation from content creators that are from WITHIN the culture.

Big face Buddha, get my peace from within

Need to experience this in a club expeditiously

  • I think my tentative album ranking is:

GKMC - nostalgia factor + perfect middle ground of commercial & conceptual

TPAB - artistically his best but dense so I don't revisit quite as much as GKMC. Still a masterpiece tho

GNX - easily his most fun/accessible listen

Damn/Morale - both of these have high highs but some lower lows for me (still love both)

How is it not accessible? There's not some big overarching theme you have to listen to 100 times to understand it's just bangers and some more lowkey cuts

It’s strictly a west coast sound.

Telling yall a lot of people don't f*** with the sound of this album out here on the east.
