The point I diverge with you on is that I don’t think Kendrick cares man. lol. And it seems like people want him to care, because it would match his branding that a lot of his fans are beholden to, but I think there’s two things going on.

1. Introspection doesn’t really equate to understanding the world at large.
2. I think for non-black people, myself included, there’s a tendency to conflate that and make it into a bigger role. Now how much Kendrick leans into it and how much people place it on him, I think is a give and take.

So do I think if he cared, he could make an impact? Of course. Macklemore’s actions will lead to more artists boycotting Israel. May seem trivial, but it’s not.

Do I, personally, expect him to? No. He’s not a Mos Def. You listen to a Mos Def album, there’s a global sense within it. I can listen to a Mos Def verse and sense he’s speaking to both places I grew up in, Inglewood and Palestine, simultaneously.

Do people expect him to based on point two? Yes.

My last point would be that good activists are agitators. So yes you’ll continue seeing this kind of discourse whether it’s Kendrick or Radiohead or whoever. It’s one sector of activism, not all Palestinian activism, centers on this. For me, it doesn’t because i don’t really behold Kendrick to it.

I agree with the first point to an extent. I’ve become too old to really identify an artist with myself but acknowledge a lot of people do, and that’s unhealthy.

However the second point is just a defeated attitude. And it’s actually the reason why Americans, at large, should and are actually starting to care.

This s*** isn’t gonna be solved by one artist or one statement. This is about momentum, for those who do care, and the long haul. It’s about building to a paradigm shift that will take time. And it’s about making it more and more inconvenient to be indifferent towards or in support of Israel.
