Like Kendrick is a great artist obviously but he’s not a revolutionary and that’s okay. I think we just have to be honest sometimes about what’s happening. There are real artists out there who are willing to put their careers on the line to say and do the hard stuff. Kendrick doesn’t seem to be one of them. That’s cool. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t do anything though. He does a lot im sure.

aeolowlEven tho I said my peace on this thread, I really just wanted to learn and engage in some real discussion about this topic. Maybe I said some s*** that’s ignorant, maybe I didn’t. Maybe I’m thinking too hard about it, maybe I’m not. I just see a lot of people emphasizing this man still and wanted to know why this specific situation in the world has to be up to Kendrick Lamar
no ones asking him to singlehandedly intervene
they're saying use ur position of social capital to amplify, highlight and materially support a suffering people.its up to him whether that's just palestine - or perhaps kongo, sudan, somalia, ayiti, cuba, nepal, papua new guinea, brazil, venezuela {or even right at home in california; last year's ICE riots} as well.. {clearly he's had plenty of options}
but this whole 'staying quiet' {complicity} s*** is just a waste. i most certainly dont wanna hear him double bacc 2 years later tb he was {doing stuff behind the scenes} on a new album - cus whether or not that's true, being vocal and backing up words with action are doable simultaneously.
he's felt comfortable dissing world leaders before, thematically hinged at least 2 of his studio albums on sociopolitical concepts, used the aesthetics of a trip to Africa and utmost reverence to 2pac shakur as materiality in his art (the latter of which almost certainly would've drawn attention by now to the readily understood cause/genocide of palestinians, especially if angela davis still can)
also leveraged likely the 2nd most important rap beef of all time into using one of the biggest concert venues in the world to present the persona of someone that cares about the plight of Black folk in modern amerika. from his early beginnings to the social conditions he's illustrated that've gained him ascendancy..
it's not so crazy to hope he'd continue utilizing his platform / maintained image for positive, actionable change - especially when he keeps exploiting it for capitalist gain and to remind early fans of "who" he is. there's plenty of neoliberal peers and figures to his supposed {political} right who've already done so. he'll belabor about youth and rape culture in hip-hop only when he finds it convenient to do so yet after becoming a nascent elderstatesmen, fails to set the example {or light new gen artists off the runway with his pgLang torch) for upholding the genre's most stark quality: timely truth to power -- particularly in the face of some of the world's most pressing, on-going issues
all of it is just a very sad facade, but such is the way of the international superstar (although one could make the argument that position necessitates an even larger responsibility from him). allat "i'm not your savior" / "he doesn't owe {the people who made him what he is} anything" s*** is dead on arrival to me --- what he has to lose is less than what he's gained from us. if drake is moving like michael jackson.. he's moving like michael jordan. but again, nobody is shocked. just.. disappointed.
