I hate to bring Drake up but it's insane the difference in conversation had about their music.

Not really, the album is about repeated cycles (and breaking them), Kodaks childhood, and upbringing is the root cause that led him to commit the actions he did.

It’s not like Kendrick is asking you personally to forgive Kodak and have sympathy for him, he’s using Kodak as an example of how trauma exists and continues to perpetuate itself in communities and families through generations. Kendrick also poses the question, would R Kelly do the things he did if he wasn’t victimised himself?

What Kendrick is trying to show his audience through speaking about his own trauma and vices and using Kodak as a sort of muse, is that part of the healing process is to be conscious of your traumas and how they manifest in your actions so you can get ahead of it. So you don’t end up being abusive like Kodak, or being a serial cheater and hurting and losing your partner like Kendrick. That’s how I interpret his use of Kodak on the album but I understand why people have issues with it.

said this millions of times and they choose to not get it 😴

Yep, despite their shared backgrounds, Kendrick has managed to overcome many of the struggles of his upbringing, whereas Kodak remains seen as a victim in the public eye, still dealing with the repercussions of his environment
Silent Hill exemplifies this duality, with Kendrick striving for peace while Kodak reflects on a life still mired in turmoil. their contrasting perspectives highlight the different paths their similar beginnings have taken them
Both Baby Keem and Kodak Black have interludes that serve to represent different facets of Kendrick's identity. This duality is crucial to understanding Kendrick's narrative about his life and upbringing.
The image of Kendrick holding his children with a gun tucked into his waistband symbolizes the tension between protection and violence, peace and aggression. It visually represents the duality within Kendrick, both the nurturing father and the product of a harsh environment.
It also feeds into Kendrick's critique of Drake that stems from a perceived insincerity in Drake's public persona. Kendrick sees Drake as masking his pain with materialism and seeking acceptance through a false image, which contrasts with Kendrick's own journey towards authenticity and self-acceptance.

I think a lot of people just look at the surface and think “why is Kendrick putting Kodak on he should be cancelled, he supports abusers!”

When that’s not it at all. He’s basically just saying hurt people, hurt people, take responsibility for your trauma and don’t pass that on to the next generation, but he’s not just “telling” people to do that that would be “preachy” he’s showing you this is what he’s doing to fix his family.

it’s the same thing with him wearing that crown of thorns, he says he’s not your savior on the album and their conclusion is that he has a God complex

not much thinking went into breaking down that album on this site

I am not exaggerating when I say 80% of that non-discussion was perpetuated by drake stans trying to claim some false victory by constantly mentioning first week sales, billboard placing, streaming numbers and low iq false narratives like the Kodak one being broken down itt and the misunderstanding of Auntie Diaries

This such a reach to justify his inclusion tbh

    It is a reach.

Paying a rapist to rap and tour with you does not become irreproachable just because you had a thematic idea behind it.

    They did perform together though.

Regardless, Kodak got paid to be on the album and also receive residual checks due to the fact that silent Hill Was one of the most popular songs on his album

They performed together in a festival they both headlined, changes nothing

Are you going to stop attending every festival that lets him headline and stop listening to every artist on UMG since they allow Kodak to make money or nah

    weird rebuttal

  • Why do people complain nowadays when Hip Hop artists aren't saints? Didn't that be used to part of the appeal? The imperfections , the battle between good and evil. I always loved DMX 'Slippin' because of this.

Are people not meant to be allowed to learn from their mistakes? Kodak had a Number 1 song 'Super Gremlin' a year before Kendrick's album was out so the audience clearly didn't care.

It’s funny to me when people try to stand tall on an opinion that you can clearly tell is not backed by the actual music itself. The post above broke it down perfectly, and if you actually understood the album you wouldn’t be questioning anything

It's to show what Kendrick could've been if he grew up without an active father lol Kodak is a mirror to a lot of kids in urban communities who grow up without guidance whether you like it or not Kendrick makes music about reality
