Yeah, I think his cynicism has helped him survive in the public eye this long.

It was his cynicism — his willingness to play around with a tongue in cheek ‘tough’ persona and combine it with his established softie vulnerable rnb brand — that took him from cool new rapper to superstar. IYRTITL he said f*** it, I’ll put gunshots in my songs for no reason on than them being cool, I’ll play around with dancehall for no reason other than its pop appeal. F*** it, I’ll flesh my brand out to be whatever it has to be the biggest and the best. He made some really, really great, innovative music from this period of real experimentation and drive from around 2015-2017. But that market-tested brand optimization I mentioned before hit its inevitable plateau after More Life. The Pusha diss was critical — that hard, originally tongue in cheek ‘keep a blade on me when I go to check a b****’ attitude that was originally just an avenue for expanding his musical horizons? The pusha diss made him cold, bitter, and somehow even more scathingly cynical than before. So that attitude that was originally tongue in cheek got revisioned — it was actually never tongue in cheek. I’ve always been hard as f***, I was just playing the game when I started out poppy. I’ve always been a mobster, I’ve always hung out with killers, DO NOT f*** with me.

Yes. Another sweep coming. I’ve bet about half of my savings on it. Just enough that I won’t end my life if I lose, but enough that if I win I’ll be happy for the rest of the year.

    Heh, that was close

Yeah, it’s interesting to think about how the Push situation ended up influencing him and his entire thing.
He obviously survived, and even thrived after, but I think it certainly made him look at himself and see what could be reinvented
