The theme is therapy and self reflection and ultimately choosing himself over his previous ambitions of “saving the world”
My interpretation of the church scene is it actually contradicts the themes of the album more than reinforces it
I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with the song really, it still adds to the album being a very intense and thoughtful listen
But Kendricks thoughts aren’t infallible
The song is about a complex issue and the song has certain things about it’s execution that can be slightly confusing or at least provoke some questions
And maybe that’s the point
I just really don’t think this is a case of media literacy. Most of us get the general point Kendrick was trying to make but that doesn’t mean we can’t question it. This is part of media literacy and dissecting something
Bro are you f***ing stupid? The theme is choosing himself, this is just another example of it.
It's not up for interpretation when he ends that part of the song what telling you the point of it: I chose my family over my religion.
