If you want to measure popularity look at touring numbers. The more popular artists sell out bigger venues more frequently than less popular artists. Look at how fast tickets sell out.

Also does an artist’s popularity matter? I know it’s important for outreach and procurement but from a pure artistry and enjoyment point of view I don’t think it matters if a great song is listened to by many or a few. It’s still a great song, and we can judge it my it’s merits.
I feel like albums sales and numbers in general is shallow argument from people who are either tired of a***yzing music or don’t know how to.
