Drake has a much bigger fanbase than Kendrick, since he makes way more mainstream appealing music - so those people would've never given it to Kendrick either unless he made it undeniable - those people far outnumber the people that would've never given it to Drake - the situation wasn't in Kendrick's favour in the beginning at all.
ur not accounting for the power of the vocal minority. Kendrick might have less total fans, but his fans are much more present in online discussions. reddit has always leaned more towards kendrick than drake, same with a significant portion of rap twitter. not to mention that fantano, the most influential figure in the online music nerd culture, is a passionate drake hater and has been s***ting on him for years.
