I say this with all due respect as someone with a deceased parent as well (my condolences)

I think there are many mentally healthy racist people. The thing that's "wrong" with a racist's brain is simply that they are f***ing stupid. Very likely miseducated and sheltered.
The fact that there are former Neo-Nazis out there who have learned and come to reject their once racist ideas and beliefs is proof that it's not a mental illness or disability thing. But a choice to actually learn more about the world and people around them, and rejecting racism.

we agree on nearly everything here except that i think being miseducated and sheltered to the point that racism becomes “rational” to someone makes them mentally ill, and the treatment is reeducating them so they reject that thought pattern

Because racism can’t just be chalked up to either mental illness or even not being informed enough when there are real, material incentives for certain segments of people to maintain white supremacy
It’s certainly not in the medium to long term interest of most working class white people, but it can be in the short term. So yeah this is where education can come in, but the immediate interest still exists so it can’t always just be boiled down to ignorance even in those cases. But there’s absolutely sections of white people who have a sustained interest in keeping it going that no amount of education is going to correct
