So the Trump admin has to purposely be attempting to detangle and isolate the US from other countries through the use of these tariffs, right?

The way he continuously seems to threaten Canada and the EU if they were to retaliate seems to almost be goading at this point, because why wouldn’t they, especially given the constant flip flopping creating more and more instability.

This was my initial thought, and still is to some degree. But after seeing the leaks from the Signal group chat, I think there are some in this admin that genuinely believe these tariffs are a way to assert dominance and rebuild what they see as a loss of respect for America

It’s hard to say with Trump. If we take his words and actions at face value, he’s raising tariffs and threatening trade wars in order to get “better deals” and/or bring some of those jobs back domestically.

The problem is this is an outdated af strategy that arguable didn’t even work in the early 20th century. Those type of jobs are gone, automation has taken a lot of them and corporations are not going to build production plants stateside in a turbulent political era where any tariffs might be gone in the next 3 years (or 3 days the way Trump flip/flops). The cheap cost of shipping means there’s plenty of ways to get around tariffs by making your product in one country, shipping to another that doesn’t have tariffs with the US, and sending to the US from there (usually with a fee to the middle man that undercuts the tariff).

This raises costs to both consumers and businesses stateside which hurts us economically, and even if any jobs do “make it back” domestically, this is usually only temporarily and is an inefficient allocation of resources considering they are essentially being artificially propped up, and those resources could be better focused in more efficient domestic industries.

Any “better deals” he aims to get aren’t likely to materialize either because of the impudent way he goes about it and the zero-sum game nature of international entities and trade. Countries are digging in their heels and creating trade deals with one another at the exclusion of the US
