Kissland was the birth of his female pandering tone, so will always be his worst album to me (tied with BBTM). Hearing songs like Professional and Pretty make me gag

I feel like niggas got fooled by the hello kitty marketing just cuz he changed the color palette to black/green

To be fair, I haven’t listened to the album in a minute but I emphasize it’s the tone he’s singing in. His entire voice changed on Kissland. It is glorified laying in the bathtub with candles music.

My mental fanfic is that he knew girls packed his shows, were getting XO tatted on them after the mixtapes but if you asked any of them if Weeknd was attractive they’d all tell you hell no. So he set out on this album to croon to the cokehead gals and generate more allure.

As for R&B, not all of it is marketed in the same way —plenty of artists explore themes like romance or s***in a way which isn’t as heavily gendered in their appeal (ie. you can relate to it from both sides)

Title track is the exception. It dropped as “John Carpenter” 4 or 5 months before Kissland released, so I view it separately

genuinely one of the most confusing receptions to an album ever. his fans called this mainstream pandering? it’s a focused, and in some ways more polished version of the trilogy sound with the cool ass japan theme
