star in the hood really is an auditory representation of social death

I’ve listened to Star in the Hood a lot since its release, trying to catch the concept. Nothing is ever clear concept-wise with her projects, but I believe the album is somewhat about the loss of innocence and turmoil in ones youth and teenage years and how it affects people as adults. The album almost feels like going through someone’s diary who has been through a lot and is searching for hope. Klein is great at creating these abstract sonic worlds that are very idiosyncratic and always up for interpretation. I can definitely see her scoring a film one day.
