It's not a musical
Only thing musical about it is that all the dialogue of Alejandro's mother is in opera. It was important for him because the film is about his father who tried to supress the whole family and who Alejandro really was from the inside. His mother always wanted to be an opera singer but her husband always stopped her from doing what she wanted and made her work in his shop (the shop where a portion of this film takes place as well)
he went back to Tocopilla in Chile, where he used to live.
It's half autobiographical half fictional surrealism
