This cover art is actually brilliant. The main objective of album artwork is to market the album full stop. This has evolved over time to creatively represent the music that’s being presented but it’s still used to sell the album. In the digital era, album covers need a memeable component to drive the marketing. This cover executes this objective on a high level. You’ve been on social media. It’s done it’s job.
On a deeper level, it simultaneously is a call back to the commissioned artists famous Virgin Mother sculpture and his poke a dot series. The albums themes of toxic masculinity are fully represented with the diverse pregnant woman emojis. Only a complete f***boy, the character I think Drake is playing on this album, would get this many women pregnant. You know what else it makes you think of? “YOU’RE HIDING A CHILD.” This cover clearly pokes fun at that. The animated version shown on the streaming services makes the cover a little unsettling. To me, it matches the dark and depressing vibe of the entire record.
That being said, do you have to like it? No, absolutely not. It’s ridiculous and cringeworthy but there’s more to it than it seems. Mans also carved a heart in his head so the album deserved something as ridiculous as this.
