    1. After Hours - The Weeknd

Not much of a surprise here. After Hours was my most anticipated album of the year, as well as my most listened to of the year. For me, After Hours signifies the start of a new chapter in my life as it was released only a week after many of our lives changed pretty drastically. As others can relate, many aspects in my life have changed presumably permanently, for both good and bad, but March 2020 is a month that will live in infamy, but The Weeknd was a shining light through it all. The central theme of the album focuses on being alone, perfect for the start of worldwide lockdowns. From the demons I’ve battled on my own, After Hours was there through it all...It has not left my daily rotation since release and has to be by far my most played album of the year. From the opening synths to the closing breaths, After Hours is a cinematic journey of an album unparalleled by anything this year; Not only with the music, but with the rollout, visuals, performances, etc... Abel came out on top and made this b**** ass of a year his own.

Favorite Tracks: Alone Again, Faith, After Hours

    2. What’s Your Pleasure? - Jessie Ware

Going to be honest, if I wasn’t a Weeknd stan (or Abel didn’t go so hard this year) this would be #1 AOTY. I mean who the f*** begins an album with Spotlight??? F***ing GOATs that’s who. This album feels like I’m a woman in her mid30s trying to convince a stubborn man in a nightclub to come home with me. It’s as cinematic as After Hours but doesn’t carry that same burden of loneliness, the yin to my 2020 AOTY yang.

Favorite Tracks: Spotlight, Save A Kiss, Mirage (Don’t Stop)

    3. Alfredo - Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist

After what seems like a year of what seemed like no hip hop, Freddie Gibbs & Alc came through with one of the strongest albums of the year. Admittedly, I had lost interest in the direction most hip hop had headed after around 2017, but knowing Piñata and Bandana were favorites of mine from their respective years, checking this out was a no brainer, and my expectations were more than exceeded. From the little samples that start the songs, to the live instrumentation this album creates a sonic (I know sorry) landscape that no album I’ve heard this year compares to. Gibbs’ voice compliments the instrumentals extremely nicely. It’s also my only album this year that has features!

Favorite Tracks: Scottie Beam, Look At Me, All Glass

    4. SAWAYAMA - Rina Sawayama

As my AOTY list shows different decades explored in 2020 (Abel got the 80s, Jessie got the 70s...) Rina here gives us a beautiful album that showcases themes of 90s/00s pop, rock, R&B... The opening track “Dynasty” sets the tone with a pseudo-Evanescence kind of track, the entire album is filled with this sort of angst that isn’t just anger but the emotion is all there. Aside from the obvious rock influences there are clear nods to 2000s pop (XS, Comme Des Garçons) and R&B (Love Me 4 Me). Despite being all over the place sonically, there is a beautiful cohesion all throughout the album that creates a fantastic listening experience

    Favorite Tracks:

    5 Tula Vera - Again & Again....

For one of the most lowkey releases of the year, Tula Vera takes garage rock and makes it their own. With a mixture of hard rock (Pull The Trigger, Everybody’s Listening) and softer (but still heavy) ballads (Gone With The Leaves, It’s True, Chance To See You Smile), this album is a ride from start to finish. With 2 distinct singers, this album offers a listening experience that isn’t stagnant, and goes by almost instantly.

Favorite Tracks: Gone With The Leaves, Control, It’s True
