The Nets want him to play - even got the city to go with their practice facility being a private office space so that he could practice with the team (you need to be vaccinated with at least one dose to be in a gym/athletic facility in NYC) - but there was no way to get around the requirement for playing in the actual home games.

Team chemistry is extremely hard to maintain so it doesn't make sense to make accomdations for someone that can only play 37 games (I'm assuming they're gonna play the Knicks and Raptors four times and he for sure wouldn't be able to play in Toronto or MSG without being vaccinated).

Also, KD and Harden for sure want him to play but were part of the decision with Tsai and Marks to have him be away from the team until he can be a full participant.
