Laraaji (born Edward Larry Gordon, 3 May 1943) is an American multi-instrumentalist specializing in piano, zither and mbira. He has released over 50 musical projects since debuting in 1978, many of which fall into the ambient/new age genres and are intended as meditation/mindfulness accompaniments.
The ~80 year old is still active today, releasing both new albums and compiling archival material for his ever-growing fan base.
Laraaji’s most notable music is definitely his Brian Eno produced album Ambient 3: Day of Radiance. This collaboration came to fruition after Eno heard Laraaji busking in a park, playing his electric zither.
He is also a mindfulness guru who has traveled the world spreading the practice, most notably through laughter therapy workshops.
If you enjoy ambient/new age, have any connections to mindfulness, or just wanna hear some different type music, check him out!

the goat
definitely a GOAT. such a pioneer in some of the most interesting musical genres. everything about him and the creation of his music is unorthodox, but he still manages to produce recordings of such absolute and pure beauty. one could even call his music simple; the magic is in the irreplicability of it.
I’m new to his music, but I’m loving what I’m hearing. do you have some favorite pieces you could share?

lmao crazy to see a laraaji thread but ill take it
what a goat, was listening to segue to infinity again today, such an amazing comp
I’m starting off the morning with a bath, a book (rereading Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse), and Laraaji’s 1981 recording Unicorns in Paradise.
Billed as “Atmospheric improvisation with electric keyboard and zither,” i’m highly interested on how exactly he’s going to make the music live up to a cool fantasy title like Unicorns in Paradise, but we’ll see.
Unicorns in Paradise was dope. i really enjoyed the most formless points on either side of the record, the times when the music, mostly keyboards in these moments, just drifts he does that ambient sound so well

listening to Segue to Infinity this morning. did some breath work to the first 10 minutes of Bethlehem, what a magical track. might lowkey be my fav first listen from Laraaji already
relistened to Essence/Universe this morning. that’s definitely my favorite album to meditate to so far. the whole hour has a highly consistent, relaxed & airy sound that captures the vibe of peacefully floating/drifting amazingly well. some of the best background music i’ve ever heard, especially since it holds up to more attentive listening as well.

day of radiance is a classic been in my meditations for a min now
been listening to Sun Zither a lot lately, that’s a real great release containing two tracks in the vein of his longer, more surreal compositions. it’s kinda similar to Essence/Universe and gives off that same vibe of floating and feeling blissed out.
