  • Joe Budden. Mood Muzik Vol. 2. 2006 @Durkio_World

These days Joe Budden is known more his podcast and antics than his music. However, long ago he was an emcee who people respected. The mixtape Mood Muzik Vol. 2 showcases Budden's lyricism over gritty instrumentals. I love the track "6 Minutes Of Death" where Budden, Jae Millz and Stack Bundles delivers punchline after punchline over a remix of Cassidy's "6 Minutes". Another one, is "Young Niggas" where Joe talks about his childhood. I loved how open he was and it made me interested in knowing more of his upbringing. The only weak track on here isn't a song but an interlude (Phone Sex) that serves no purpose and feels out of place. This project was a great introduction to someone who only knows Budden for "Pump It Up" and being a reality tv star.

Favorite Tracks: 6 Minutes Of Death, Young Niggas
    Least Favorite Tracks: Phone S***(Interlude)

    @Vagabonds

I remember being disappointed when this dropped so I tried to go back into this again with an open mind.

There are definitely some standout tracks here; songs like Death Grips is Online, Black Paint, and Streaky are among some of the best DG songs I've heard and have stayed in rotation all week.

However a lot of the album does feel a bit too thrown together and lacking the catchiness and strong song structure from their earlier albums. Songs like Shitshow are just a chore to listen to, and there's too much random noise. Overall there's too many ideas not executed well enough for me to like the album.

Best Songs: Death Grips is Online, Black Paint, Streaky

Worst Songs: Linda's in Custody, The Horn Section, S***show, Little
    Richard

Overall I'd give it a 5/10 due to the 3 best songs, otherwise outside of that I can't really find much to like

Confession: One thing I usually do in my spare time is watch videos on this YouTube channel called COLORS (pretty sure you’ve heard of it). I remember stumbling across one of her videos last summer and surprisingly never really got the chance to do more research on her.

There aren’t many artists in the industry that can balance vocals and instruments but as I was about 2-3 tracks in, I realized her presence on songs are unmatched. Her vocal range is ridiculous and it looks as if she does it so effortlessly. This album is so addicting I listened twice then again this morning and now I’m playing it again lmao. Thanks for this recommendation she’s got herself a new fan.

Fav songs (literally every song): Love Supreme, Yellow of the Sun, If You Ever, Make It Out Alive, etc (can’t decide)

    Bad songs: NONE!!!!

I've heard a lot of good things about The Microphones and this album specifically a lot online but I haven't checked them out yet so this was a great time to finally do it. I didn't know what to expect besides knowing that it's folk music. That said I was really happy with how this album does so much while staying relatively simple throughout. Though there was a lot left to be desired. A lot of the chord progressions just didn't click with me, it makes a few songs just blend together. The way songs were mixed differently for the left and right channel was a cool touch but I feel like a couple songs could've done better without it. The bursts of noise and uses of distortion are another part of the album I have mixed feelings on, when it's done right like on the title track it feels cathartic but sometimes it downright ruins a song like on 'Samurai Sword' where the noise is just grating and really does not feel like it's going anywhere. After reading the lyrics it's clear the song is about the protagonist getting killed by a bear but I don't think it excuses the fact it just isn't pleasant to listen to even if it's thematically potent.

The first couple tracks on this are great. Starting with 'I Want Wind to Blow', the build up is so rewarding. Starting with just the guitar strums then slowly incorporating drums, a tambourine, and some other effects really make this song feel complete and fleshed out. That breakdown at the end is also just so well executed and matches the themes of isolation in the lyrics really well. The title track comes right after and perfectly matches the energy of the last songs ending very well and eventually turns into a more somber tune. It's probably my favorite vocal performance on the album next to 'I Felt My Size'. The lyrical theme of wanting to die is also really well done. The first Instrumental track was a great example of the album saying so much with so little. Some other high points were 'Map', 'I Felt My Size', 'You'll Be In the Air' and 'I Felt Your Shape'.

Overall I feel like a lot of the problems I have with this album just come down to my musical palette. I gave this album two listens and I feel like if I listened to it more and really honed on the lyrics then I would grow a deeper appreciation for the record but so much of it just isn't very interesting musically to me. I will probably revisit this because everything I know about this record so far has shown me how well written and well thought out the whole thing is but as of now I can say this isn't for me.

    5/10

Sorry if this organized weirdly, it felt right this way.

never heard a tortoise album, let alone a single song before this rec, did see their name floating around heavy in the post rock scene. i love me some swans and slint, so this was already an eye popper.

out of the gate, it seems like this is an instrumental album. not 100% fond of it, but it catches on. djed is an incredible track, the latter 3 and first parts are my favorite, but no clue why they are in one track, but i can’t complain too much. can’t say s*** about the length, i’m used to that long of songs, and the sequencing helps out a ton in this case, something not many post rock bands do. it’s the only “long” song on the entire album, could either be a good or a bad thing. 9.5/10

glass museum is more what i’m used to. just temporary pr. alot of comparisons to slint for me. love the unconventional instruments in the psedo-interlude (the xylophone and the.... congos?) that’s all i got it’s really good. 9/10

a survey is the shortest song here. crickets in the background give this a wild atmosphere, again, reminds me of slint. don’t like this as much, but fairly a good song. not a whole lot going on, but it doesn’t need that. 7/10

taut & tame is a major overhaul from the previous track, a little more upbeat, good sequencing. much like the other, don’t have too much to say again, but this was really good too. 8.5/10

i love dear grandma and grandpa man. sounds like something straight out of an underwater games’ soundtrack (helps that the cover has whales on it.) need a whole album that captures the experience of this track. samples are extremely fire too, gonna need the origins of those 10/10

i think along the banks of rivers is a great closure for the album. visualizing it, it’s a mix of a western/hawiian vibe to it. really great song 9/10

millions now living will never die gave me a really good first impression whilst listening to it. as you can tell, it reminded me a lot of slint lol, since i kept mentioning them all the time. but yeah it reminds me of a more accessible slint. tortoise did a very good mix of post- rock and some jazz percussion (that’s what i think). great album, i’ll check out more of their albums for sure. would’ve done better without the middle tracks, especially a survey, but it is what it is

    9/10

highlights:djed, glass museum, dear grandma and grandpa

    lowlights: a survey

Really glad you enjoyed this btw

and u real for Slint, that's how I found Tortoise too lol

Captain Beefheart: Trout Mask Replica @woahuhyeah

This such odd album to talk about because it's one of those love it or hate it albums. This album is borderline comedy level bad with it sounding like some amateur musician f***ing around recorder as if nobody's listening will at least get something out of this. The album is such chore for me to listen to as while some bits are intersting in both listens i kept checking the time to see how long left before i can finish listening to the record. It just doesn't appeal to me in anyway. The vocals are most off putting thing i have heard. I don't know what to say about this record i might need drop acid to it to see if my opinion has changed about it.

I can't give best or worst because all tracks blend to each other but the first half is somewhat enjoyable before moronity kicks in it needed to be half of the length for me personally

    i will give it 4/10

    The Cure - P***ography
    @Yeezy131519

Always heard of these niggas but never really got into their music or this genre period so I was intrigued going into this.

One Hundred Years and The Hanging Garden are great great tracks that I find myself replaying. The first half of the album was def the strongest half imo but the whole album ain't bad. The vocal performance on this I loved, best part of the album for me. However, some of these tracks I kinda get bored with after a while. If they were cut like a minute shorter that would be great. The instrumentals kinda sound a bit same-ey to me at times also.

The context of the album's release def helped add to the listening tho, made me appreciate it more. Backstories to albums are always tight to me. Subject matter and s*** definitely fit these last 4-5 months lmfao.
