I’m new to his films, but I found this more unnecessarily wacky and inconsistent than boring.

I haven't seen it in half a decade and barely remember it but I'm pretty sure this is the first time in history someone has referred to a Wenders road film as wacky

    Put me on Street Angel

Frank Borzage got a knack for humanistic, romantic feel to his films. Compelled by emotions even. I recommend that. Like in 1927’s 7th Heaven is even better.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised by my estimation of it as well. Rewatch it when you have the time because Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz’s relationship in it is strange. Endearing, but strange.

Nobody was so good. Bob Odenkirk was hilarious and seeing Christopher Lloyd was heartwarming until he started mowing down russians lmao

Zola. Kinda fun, I guess, but not as good as the Twitter thread, which had an epilogue and everything. Felt pretty incomplete. Waste of good performances.

This. It just ended, which was anticlimactic asl, but it's a good flick. Surprised by how divisive it is tho

a few by Marcell jankovics, Hungary’s most famous animator. All 3 movies are psychedelic takes on pre-1900s Hungarian literature. This gives the stories an ancient, mythological, often religious feel, which fits each movie in its own way

    Janos Vitez (Johnny Corncob)

Hungary’s first animated feature. this one has a very simple story and the animation is at its most basic, so it’s a good introduction to how jankovics tells stories expressively. 8/10

    Son of the White Mare

About 10 years following Johnny corncob, this feature is Marcell’s most beautifully designed, drawn, and animated. The colors are controlled but still vibrant, the symmetry and geometry feels like religious imagery from an acid trip, and all of it supports the story without distracting from it. 10/10

    The Tragedy of Man

an epic no matter how you define the word, the tragedy of man is a near 3 hour experience that tells the story of mankind from its creation, to early civilizations, to modern day, all the way through to its last days.

I’m still digesting this one. It’s length is daunting and it’s subject matter is pretty heavy for any movie, much less a cartoon. But the ambition alone to highlight 12 major phases in human history -each depicted in a corresponding art style- is madness. When the credits roll it’s not surprising to learn it took 30 years to put together.

The movie isn’t all history lesson either, the story follows a nice arc. The style is a little less abstract than earlier jankovic movies depending on the era of art that’s being imitated, but the storytelling is as expressive as ever. This makes the cruel violence a little more digestible and the bleak existential ideas more engaging. Im particularly fond of the cross-hatched section towards the middle. (10/10)

I highly recommend all 3, but if you can only watch one I’d go with son of the white mare
