  • Straw Dogs (1971) 8.3/10
Dustin Hoffman's character reminded me of some y'all KTT cats

The whole movie is a pile of dynamite, with each culture clash, debate, argument and action adding more and more sticks to the pile. It all explodes with about thirty minutes remaining in the film but even before the bloodshed comes about Peckinpah doles out a long, intense moment of trepidation in a small community.

Finally saw Come and See (1985). Long story short, it's a good movie. It surprised me, and to quote a rym reviewer I don't care for that much, that surprisal surprised me. I mean, it occasionally seems like there's only so much that can be done with a 'war' movie. To lay one criticism, I wish there was a bleaker ending. That might sound weird, but after everything this movie depicts, to toss in some hopeful idealism strikes me as a bit phony. And this consistently gets called one of the bleakest films ever - it still is, but.. idk

Claude Chabrol's La Ceremonie (1995) is phenomenal. Very Haneke-like, but with much more complex, and even likable human personalities. Isabelle Huppert is amazing in it (as always) as is Sandrine Bonnaire who I haven't seen before, but her style in this reminds me of shades of Huppert in Piano Teacher+Elle

For more godly Sandrine Bonnaire performances, peep Vagabond (1985), A Nos Amours (1983), The Color of Lies (1999), and Secret Defense (1998)

Silver Lake is so weird it overall feels like its interesting but every ten minutes some completely awful dialogue or moment happens. And overall it just feels so inferior to similar films satirical, noir-styled films about L.A. And it constantly went from being a interesting "there's no rhyme or reason to any of this just let it happen" to another moment where the commentary is about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face.

I predicted that I'd not like it. During it I actually had hopes. But ultimately I ended up being let down.

I was feeling that I was way too lenient. films that may have gotten an 8/10 are now 7/10 and so on. I'm just having way too many 4.5s and 5s while I often see huge discrepancies in quality/how good I think they are even though they share the same rating.

For example, I would have given Horse Money 4.5 stars before. The same rating as My Joy or Thelma but I enjoyed them much more. However, Horse Money was definitely great.

You first sentence is funny cause I was gonna say that I feel like I'd be enjoying it, but then every ~15-20 mins there's something that kills my satisfaction. And on top of it beating me over the head thematically, several visual motifs popped up so frequently that they became obnoxious — even as early as 45 mins into the film I was getting tired of seeing the memorabilia and callback props in virtually every other shot

It def has some strengths, but overall it felt mediocre to me

oh yeah, two moments that immediately came to mind where when Topher Grace went on this weird rant. And also that moment when Garfield walks into the rooftop party and someone in the background loudly talks about male gaze and the film basically uses this to loudly shout "GET IT WE KNOW ABOUT MALE GAZE SO THE 5 BILLION TIMES WE DO IT ARE ALL IRONIC"

And when Garfield is in that cemetery and it's directors names I wanted to punch the screen.

Honestly think it would've been better if it didn't try so hard to be something and instead was more of a Inherent Vice - Burn after Reading type romp. Then I wouldn't have to think so much about the films sexism and s***.

the problem with ratings. you rate things for 1-2 years and when you look them over you'll find that either you rated a bunch of films you think are really really good the same as the ones you find great. Or you end up with 5 10/10 films that when you really think about aren't much better than some f the 9s you've given out.
