I wasn't too crazy about 1917 or Little Women, the productions felt equally sterile even tho I ultimately enjoyed both. More or less manageable acting, soundtracks, set design and cinematography. Just feels like incredibly safe movie-making, though that's not too surprising I guess. At first I thought I might just not be loving contemporary American film that much, but then remembered how great Uncut Gems was - so they just aren't for me. Gonna watch Knives Out tomorrow
Also, some random positives - I loved the crossing of no man's land for 1917 and Florence Pugh in Little Women, though the movie really does seem to rely on familiar faces (so not all positive, unfortunately) - seeing Bob Odenkirk pop in and add to the pile like..

I saw Cats today and I have some thoughts.

Cats (2019)
2/10
One of the most horrifying experiences of my life. The visual effects in this movie are so disturbing that it prevented me from focusing on anything else. From the moment the first cat appears on screen, it’s hard to look at and never gets easier through the entire movie. There is no real story hear, but even if there was I wouldn’t have noticed because I was too busy trying to figure out wtf was going on with these f***ing cats.
How the human faces move with the cat bodies is the most interesting part. There are moments where the cat head will move and the face will stay in place or lag behind. Their faces move in sync with their heads like Blueface rides a beat. And it doesn’t help that these cat monstrosities have human hands and feet too. It’s crazy to think that they allude to these little demons living with actual human beings. I can’t believe humans wouldn’t kill these things on sight. And the cats aren’t even the worst ones. There are mice in this that are waaaay smaller than the cats and have children’s faces pasted on them and I’m sorry to say this but they should all be killed with fire because they are crimes against God.
There are so many moments that I can’t unsee in this movie and just about all of them came from Rebel Wilson and James Corden. I witnessed cat Rebel Wilson eat human-faced cockroaches like it was nothing and she unzipped and climbed out of her skin multiple times in this movie. Seeing cat James Corden savagely eat rotted meat from a trash can up close is something I wish I could wipe from my memory, but I’m sure it will dominate my nightmares tonight. I have to give the movie credit for teleporting these two fat mfing cats outta the film and chaining them up so we didn’t have to deal them falling all over the place and screaming for a good hour.
This s*** doesn’t make any sense. Cat Judi Dench makes me feel weird. Cat Ian McKellen is terrible and can’t sing. Most of the music sucks a lot. The characters are all one note. I can’t even talk about cat Taylor Swift or cat Jason Derulo right now because it was all too much. And seeing naked cat Idris Elba made me wanna end my s***.
I can’t believe people ok’d this. It literally looks unfinished. This movie is loaded with bullshit, but I gotta say there a few moments I liked. The Mr. Mistofeless number towards the end was very cute and entertaining and was easily one of the best songs in the whole thing (lowkey was humming that s*** afterwards). Also even though these cats looked f***ed up, cat Francesca Hayward’s cat body kinda did something for me and I don’t know how to feel about that... So those parts were good.
Bad boys for life
1/5
I actually hate myself for falling for the hype and watching this trash
The 1968 Monkeys' movie Head is really f***ing good. It lowkey gave me some Monty Python x Neon Genesis Evangelion x David Lynch vibes w hippy wrappings. Funny, occasionally creepy, happy-feeling movie. I was not expecting to love it so much. Oh, it reminded me a lot of Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain. Of course, it precedes all those reference points. Phenomenal stuff
Being John Malkovich (Spike Jonze)
7.5/10
Good movie, original and unique screenwriting, with good pacing and storytelling. However, it was disappointing as I was expecting Eternal Sunshine levels of enjoyment. Maybe I "don't get it" but this movie has a cult like following which is beyond me.
Gemini Man
Went in with literally zero expectations, hell even some worries cause no one be talking about it
Turns out movie was lowkey absolute a blast, plot stays on the low never goes over the top
Cinematography definitely helps it as it looks so natural and real, no filters or saturation, also watched this in 4K s*** was too clean man, some shots were intriguing also, gave me some Mann vibes sometimes
Action was extremely tight, some M:I feels but even more grounded, but as well choreographed and original
CGI was impressive
Was the bad guy Steppenwolf? looks like him
Ending had me with a big grin on my face “what? Please you wish!”
Man I should check out more Ang Lee movies huh? who would’ve thought
Cgi was impressive? Were you high?

Nah man there was about one scene that looked off because of lightening but other than that it was absolutely remarkable and believable, I don’t know where else you’ve seen better or your point of reference buddy
