music fans tend to not be fans of the artist themselves, but the music they create. with rap being the ultimate genre leak culture thrives in, this has lead to many people not welcoming an artists' newest effort, simply because their favorite leaks aren't on the project. this mindset is extremely entitled, and wether it stems from privilege or fans hellbent love for said songs, it is extremely disrespectful to the artist and the result is 2020.
Lil Uzi Vert created the modern "Deluxe" album with his sophomore release, eternal atake. Where back in the day with albums such as Watch The Throne, Nothing Was The Same, and Good Kid Maad City, the deluxe of an album served as a deleted scenes for the project. with songs coming from soundcloud like the motion on NWTS or reworked tracks from past eras like The Joy on WTT, it was only 2-5 tracks at most. Uzi literally ripped the head off that idea and made a move that was unheard of at the time. Uzi asked his fans what songs they wanted to be on the deluxe via twitter, and essentially crowd sourced creative direction for what he now has called Lil Uzi Vs the World 2. This sparked a wildfire through the rap community as a result of the deluxe selling almost just as much as the album did the next week. Nav, Gunna, and even Taylor Swift have followed suit, boosting their sales and pleasing their fans. But where do we cross the line between fan service and full on creative integrity being thrown in the wind?
Playboi Carti has just recently dropped what in my opinion is his best work yet, WholeLottaRed. A 24 track album from the mind of Jordan Carter has infected my mind with this amazing project. Yet people are not even sitting to listen to this album because they are complaining on twitter about their favorite leak not being on the project, and carti is about to please his fans. Recently he went to. twitter to ask fans like uzi what songs did they want on the deluxe. This nigga got 24 tracks already and we doing a whole DELUXE. are people going to listen to the actual album? will its beauty be hidden in a mist of circlejerking over goku cdq? who knows. but what I do know is that these fans are f***ing with artist giving the world what THEY want. its not about y'all bro, remember that!
at least its not like back in the day when every album leaked in full months early
Not so much leaks as streaming imo
Streaming encourages bloated projects 'fishing' for a hit. It also incentivises raw quantity through how sales are calculated.
As opposed to putting your s*** on a CD and what you see is what you get, hard to argue that playlist/fast food attitudes towards music haven't had a negative effect.

^
the world of leaks and unreleased music has existed since CD’s
streaming and internet culture has just created the opportunity of markets in every single facet of society, including places where it shouldn’t be
I just enjoy the albums for what they are and if I get more music on top of that then great
its only really a certain type of artists who are victims of leak culture.
Maybe they should be more careful with who they send their music to, and where they store their songs at.

RT streaming is a double edged sword
