a decent school literally tells you and encourages you to use it irl and to absorb media
again, it depends on the school and person
but iirc, it is a statistic fact from some years ago most people arent in a language class to actually learn the language, theyre there just for the grade because most states require a language credit (which is a negative imo and makes language learning have this bad "stink" on it to most people)
there is also the thing of certain languages are "easier" depending on your native language
but regardless, language requires a lot of dedication that most people simply dont put in the effort to learn, even outside of s*** teachers and s*** schools - flashcards and a test is not everything, even decent schools will talk about this
and then the biggest thing of all, if you dont use it, then you will lose it. which usually happens a lot with college students too. they knew a decent amount in school, but never needed it again outside their grade, so they lost it for the most part and let that memory decay.
Memory decay isn’t as much a factor when going about it via comprehensible input bc you understand it and learn it on a level similar to how you acquired your first language
Again you didn’t learn English in school. You learned the rules but not the language. Absorbing the language is king above all else everything else can help ofc but there’s no reason to learn grammar rules or one off phrases if you don’t have a fundamental understanding of what you’re hearing in the first place which is just not something American school focuses on at this time
We should really just be sticking kids in a class for like an hour or two a day in a foreign language and letting their brain figure it out bc that’s how you learn a language. Obviously have them speak in a comprehensive way but still

Comprensible input is the best way to learn a language and have it actually stick. It’s how you learned your native language
I put 1500 hours into Spanish within the span of a year and a few months. I went from what the f*** are they saying to watching native level tv and podcasts and reading books in Spanish
You don’t learn how to do that in school bc we teach second languages in an inherently flawed way in American schools

cool motivation to learn another language tbh
dont let these lazy niggas put you down, its actually a very valuable skill - spanish especially if youre in usa and leads to many job opportunities and bumps you up in the line for many jobs and promotions
also dont listen to anyones experience about learning in terms of difficultly - it literally varies person to person, your commitment and also how you learn - and if you have a real motivation to learn (which most people dont in school, theyre just doing it for a grade and then wonder why they dont retain anything)
a full year of serious learning will make you decent and able to get the gist of basic talks/reading

Good luck. Took 3 years of Spanish and only learned a few words. Any time they tried having us listen to someone speak it became impossible to translate
bro what
what u wanna do is this
start with duolingo
when u can read spanish watch spanish tv with subtitles on, between duolingo and just hearing/watching people speak it you should start learning pretty fast
u gotta be consistent tho, cus youll forget it very fast if ur not around it a lot
edit: if you know anyone who speaks it ask them to help by speaking spanish to you
