It works because his personality is so bombastic. Having his face on covers would probably feel redundant, it’s a nice juxtaposition

But all in all, Kanye is selling the artistic vision of his music for lack of a less cliched term. Most artists that have their face on their covers are selling their image in some regard (often to sell s***appeal to a female audience)
