I see people (less so here, but still) call every f***ing album they like a classic. Just because you like a record doesn't mean it's a classic. You can have a record be perfect start to finish and still not be a classic. You can have a record that's dogshit that will be remembered as a classic.
4Ever Is a Mighty Long Time is damn near perfect and (ironically) not a classic.
Appetite for Destruction is a garbage record but it's a classic.
Cultural impact and influence are essential elements in what makes a record a classic. 'Classic' gets thrown around so loosely now that it's lost it's meaning. People like a record and call it an instant classic. S*** is dumb.
appetite for destruction
Long lasting appreciation and influence in a collective, that collective being conditionally defined

What do you mean by 'conditionally defined'?
Wrong. No one knows what a classic is yet besides Motzart n s***. You don’t know what they are gonna play 100 years from now. Probably none of this s***. Def not no Assitite for Destruction

Things can be, or can not be, classics within a socially defined boundary
MBDTF is a classic within the world of HIPHOP. Even within music. Is it a classic in the world of jazz fans? In the world of old Europeans? Of Arabs?
It’s ultimately defined as a classic by the group that congregates around it and treats it as such a classic

Okay yeah I agree with that
But if we're talking about long-lasting appreciation where does a record like TM101 fit in the fold? Innovative sound that was crazy influential to the generations to come but at this point is forgotten to a certain extent. It's influence FAR outweighs its cultural appteciation, so is a long lasting appreciation really that important in the grand scheme of things?
There's probably some lesser known records we could even name that aren't appreciated by too many people but have influenced artists in the coming generations.

I bet there were classics of the times of the medieval era that we could not possibly think of now outside of the art fanatics of the modern era
I think that our lack of current recognition doesn’t invalidate their past recognition. S***, TM101 is still a classic in my eyes
