My Chemical Romance (MCR) was formed by vocalist Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001; Way said that the attacks inspired him and changed his life to such an extent that it influenced him to start a band. Shortly after the formation, the duo recruited Ray Toro as a guitarist and Way's cousin, Mikey Way, as a bassist.
“Cubicles” is a song about obsession and rejection that tells the story of a lonely office worker at a monotonous and repetitive job. He falls in love with someone who works two cubicles away from him, but she doesn’t even realize he exists.
He spends his time writing her love notes that he will never give to her and dreaming about all the things they could do together, but before he works up the courage to talk to her, she quits her job and he misses his chance.
The song may have been autobiographical, as Gerard Way worked as an intern in the Cartoon Network New York offices prior to forming the band.
