Listening to the MMLP again rn, and while it’s certainly a smaller detail, I’m really noticing and appreciating how crisp and evocative the sound effects are on this s*** this time around; the spray paint can on Remember Me, the gunshot at the end of Criminal, the cars speeding on Kim, they all really help build out a world in the music.
Obviously, Eminem is no stranger to using sound effects, with all the funny s*** he puts in the Slim Shady songs, and I love that s*** too, but I want to talk about how artists can use sound effects to better create a world to get lost in.
    What rappers do this well?
Your favorite sound effect moments in rap?
Specific songs that make you feel like you’ve been transported into the world of the song?
Whatever it is, I’d love to talk about it. While granular, I think this is an interesting little piece of design that can really elevate songs and albums, and we should appreciate it.

  • Really miss when this was a thing in production

Not sure how it hasn't organically come back in vogue actually, with people starting to appreciate things like ASMR, beat-switches and other little moments in songs like scratching and adlibs etc

It probably peaked with MMLP honestly, how did Em have an almost 7 minute song with the constant sound of a pencil writing top charts

Yeah, I feel like coming up with the sounds while constructing the core song would be overwhelming, but after most of the track is finished, you can listen through, and discern what sounds work well, and where they should go.
As for myself, the few tracks I’ve finished, I usually add the SFX in somewhere around the late mixing to early mastering stage

Yea,I think most producers/engineers add in sound effects or post effects after the song is recorded,it all depends on what tools your using. Keep in mind that, around the time of The Chronic and beyond,Dre was using a $350,000 sound board that movie studios used to finish SFX work. Forgot the exact name of it but its a pretty famous tool that he use to work on The Chronic and many other albums in the future.

  • But when Masta Artisan uses them they say "it sounds like Looney Tunes car crashing sound music"

Nah I can't even keep up that act for this post that was 100% what it sounded like

It goes hand in hand with sample culture. Ppl don't wanna dig and make their own sample libraries anymore. Let alone pick up a synth and make their own
